Tafsir al-Imam al-Shafii (Tafsir al-Imam al-Shafi'i, "Exegesis of Imam al-Shafi'i") is a compilation of Quranic interpretations, legal deductions, and linguistic glosses attributed to the jurist and eponym of the Shafi'i school, al-Shafi'i (150–204 AH / 767–820 CE) .

Nature and Compilation

Al-Shafi'i did not author a single, standalone commentary on the entire Quran organized sequentially by surah. Instead, his exegetical statements, legal deductions, and principles of Quranic interpretation were dispersed across his foundational treatises—including Kitab al-Umm, al-Risalah, and Ikhtilaf al-Hadith—as well as the transmissions of his direct disciples, such as al-Muzani, al-Buwayti, al-Rabi ibn Sulayman al-Muradi, Harmalah, al-Za'farani, Abu Thawr, and Yunus ibn Abd al-A'la .

In the fifth century AH, the Shafi'i traditionist al-Bayhaqi (d. 458 AH) assembled al-Shafi'i's dispersed statements on legal verses and exegesis into a two-part work titled Ahkam al-Quran, organizing the material primarily along topical jurisprudence chapters . In contemporary scholarship, the material was systematically reconstructed directly from al-Shafi'i's extant corpus and early biographical sources, reordering his commentary sequentially according to the traditional arrangement of the Quranic mushaf .

Content and Method

The work presents al-Shafi'i's interpretations of specific Quranic verses, beginning with Surat al-Fatihah and continuing through the subsequent surahs . His hermeneutical method rests upon foundational principles articulated in his legal theory:

  • Primacy of the apparent meaning (zahir): Al-Shafi'i maintained that verses must be understood according to their apparent literal sense unless a clear textual or contextual indicator (qarinah) warrants an alternative interpretation .
  • Arabic linguistic usage: He frequently explained polysemous terms and grammatical structures by examining Arabic idiom and varied Qur'anic usages, as exemplified by his categorization of the word ummah in different verses as denoting a religion, a span of time, or an exemplary teacher .
  • Harmonization with the Sunnah: He integrated Prophetic hadiths and narrations from the Companions to explain rulings, clarify general ('amm) and specific (khass) expressions, and demonstrate the coherence between Quranic text and Prophetic practice .

Reception and Scholarly Standing

Early scholars held al-Shafi'i's exegetical insight in high esteem. His teacher Sufyan ibn Uyaynah was reported to refer questions regarding legal rulings and exegesis to him . Ahmad ibn Hanbal described al-Shafi'i as the most knowledgeable of people regarding the Book of God and the Sunnah of His Messenger .

His student Yunus ibn Abd al-A'la stated that when al-Shafi'i engaged in exegesis, it was as though he had witnessed the revelation itself . Abu Hassan al-Ziyadi similarly praised his unparalleled capacity to discern Quranic meanings, articulate them with precision, and substantiate them using classical Arabic poetry and linguistics .

Editions

The reconstructed exegesis was compiled, edited, and studied by Ahmad ibn Mustafa al-Farran as a doctoral dissertation . It was published in three volumes by Dar al-Tadmuriyyah in Saudi Arabia (first edition, 1427 AH / 2006 CE) .
