Tadhkirat al-Mutasi fiman haddatha wa nasi (The Reminder for the Consoler Concerning Those Who Narrated and Forgot) is a short treatise on hadith terminology by the Egyptian scholar al-Jalal al-Suyuti (849–911 AH / 1445–1505 CE) .
Subject and Content
The work addresses a specialized subdiscipline of hadith sciences (mustalah al-hadith): instances where a narrator transmits a tradition to a student and subsequently forgets having narrated it, whether the teacher explicitly denies having conveyed it or merely fails to recall doing so .
The text is an abridgment (talkhis) of the earlier work Man haddatha wa-nasi by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi . Suyuti compiles thirty-seven prophetic traditions and reports (athar), presenting each alongside the historical account detailing how its narrator forgot having delivered it .
Documentation and Publication
Suyuti listed the treatise in the catalogue of his own writings and in his biographical compendium Husn al-muhadara . It is also documented in later bibliographical and biographical references, such as Hajji Khalifa's Kashf al-zunun (recorded under the variant title Tadhkirat al-mu'tasi biman haddatha wa-nasi), al-Shawkani's al-Badr al-tali', and Isma'il Pasha al-Babani's Hadiyyat al-'arifin .
The text was edited by Subhi al-Badri al-Samarra'i from a manuscript held at the al-Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (no. 1126 / Majmu' 18, ff. 131–136) and published by al-Dar al-Salafiyya in Kuwait in 1404 AH (1984 CE) .
