Tadhkirat al-Muhtaj ila Ahadith al-Minhaj (The Reminder for the Inquirer Concerning the Hadiths of al-Minhaj) is a hadith extraction (takhrij) treatise by the Shafi'i scholar Ibn al-Mulaqqin (723–804 AH / 1323–1401 CE) , documenting and sourcing the prophetic traditions and reports cited in al-Baydawi's foundational work on legal theory, Minhaj al-Wusul ila 'Ilm al-Usul .

Scope and Composition

The work provides a concise extraction and verification of the hadiths and narrations (athar) contained in Minhaj al-Usul by the Shafi'i jurist al-Qadi Nasir al-Din al-Baydawi (d. 685 AH or 691 AH) . In his introduction, Ibn al-Mulaqqin describes the book as a concise, beneficial commentary (ta'liq) on the hadiths and reports appearing in al-Baydawi's text, noting that he deliberately prioritized the discussion of prophetic hadiths before addressing non-prophetic traditions (athar) .

According to the author's colophon recorded at the end of the text, Ibn al-Mulaqqin completed drafting the treatise on Thursday, 26 Shawwal 755 AH .

Relationship to Other Works

The treatise is distinct from another hadith extraction by Ibn al-Mulaqqin bearing a similar title, Tuhfat al-Muhtaj ila Adillat al-Minhaj (also referred to as Tuhfat al-Muhtaj ila Ahadith al-Minhaj) . While Tuhfat al-Muhtaj extracts the hadith evidences for al-Nawawi's legal manual Minhaj al-Talibin in substantive jurisprudence (furu'), Tadhkirat al-Muhtaj is dedicated specifically to al-Baydawi's text on principles of jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh) .

Other scholars who engaged in extracting the traditions of al-Baydawi's Minhaj include Badr al-Din al-Zarkashi (d. 794 AH) in his al-Mu'tabar fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Minhaj wa-al-Mukhtasar, Ibn al-Mulaqqin's peer Zayn al-Din al-'Iraqi (d. 804 AH), and Abd Allah ibn al-Siddiq al-Ghumari in al-Ibtihaj bi-Takhrij Ahadith al-Minhaj .

Manuscripts and Publication

A manuscript copy of Tadhkirat al-Muhtaj is held at the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin (MS 3382) . The text was edited by Hamdi 'Abd al-Majid al-Salafi and published in one volume (165 pages) by al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut in 1415 AH / 1994 CE .
