Tadhkirat al-Mawduat (Memorandum on Fabricated Hadiths) is a compendium on fabricated traditions and narrators by the Indian hadith scholar Muhammad Tahir al-Fatani (d. 986 AH / 1578 CE) .
Subject and Sources
The work addresses the identification of fabricated and ungrounded narrations in hadith literature. Al-Fatani compiled its material primarily by summarizing and drawing upon the critical works of Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti and other earlier authorities on spurious traditions .
Structure and Related Treatise
The book is closely associated with an appended treatise by al-Fatani titled Qanun al-Mawduat wa-al-Dudafa (The Canon of Fabrications and Weak Transmitters) . This supplementary section is devoted to biographical criticism, cataloging fabricators and weak narrators arranged in alphabetical order . In its preface, al-Fatani established specific shorthand symbols to cross-reference his source texts, including using the Arabic letter lam (ل) to designate al-Suyuti's al-La'ali al-Masnu'ah and dhal (ذ) for its supplementary sequel (Dhayl) .
Publication History
Tadhkirat al-Mawduat has been printed in several editions, often published alongside Qanun al-Mawduat wa-al-Dudafa:
- A printing in Egypt dating to 1343 AH .
- An undated edition issued by al-Matba'ah al-Muniriyyah .
- Editions published in Beirut, including one by Amin Damaj and another by Dar Ihya' al-Turath al-Arabi (second edition, 1399 AH) .
