Tadhkirat al-Huffaz wa Tabsirat al-Ayqaz (A Reminder for the Hadith Memorizers and Enlightenment for the Vigilant) is a biographical dictionary of hadith masters by the Hanbali scholar Ibn al-Mubarrad (Yusuf ibn Hasan ibn 'Abd al-Hadi, 841–909 AH / 1437–1503 CE) . The work provides concise records of approximately 950 hadith memorizers (huffaz) spanning from the era of the Companions up to the author's time .
Background and Purpose
In his introduction, Ibn al-Mubarrad explains that he compiled the work to provide a comprehensive yet concise reference for the names of the hadith memorizers of the Muslim community . He reviewed earlier works in the genre and critiqued Ibn al-Jawzi's biographical treatise on memorizers, observing that Ibn al-Jawzi omitted the vast majority of hadith masters—mentioning only around one hundred individuals—and diverged from the standard terminology of the hadith scholars by including sharp-witted figures and specialists in Arabic grammar and philology . Ibn al-Mubarrad also noted that al-Dhahabi had authored a work on the ranks of memorizers (Tabaqat al-Huffaz), though he stated that he had not seen al-Dhahabi's book directly when composing his own work .
Structure and Method
Ibn al-Mubarrad begins the treatise with a conceptual chapter examining the linguistic and technical definitions of the term hafiz according to hadith scholars . He surveys various criteria recorded by scholars, ranging from memorizing more than 1,000, 3,000, 4,000, 10,000, 100,000, or 300,000 hadiths, and concludes with his preferred definition: that a hafiz is one who has committed to memory a substantial corpus of hadith, analogously to how a jurist (faqih) is one who commands a substantial body of legal rulings .
The biographical notices are arranged in alphabetical order (huruf al-mu'jam) . Each entry is deliberately condensed, typically providing:
- The scholar's full name, lineage, and agnomen (kunya) .
- The year of death .
- Explicit citations of earlier authorities who designated the individual with the title hafiz .
To extract these designations and death dates, Ibn al-Mubarrad drew extensively on other historical and biographical works, including al-Dhahabi's al-'Ibar fi Khabar man Ghabar, al-Kashif, and al-Tadhhib, the continuation (Dhayl) to al-'Ibar by al-Husayni, as well as writings by Ibn al-Jawzi and Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi .
Manuscripts and Publication
A unique autograph manuscript of the work, written in Ibn al-Mubarrad's hand and consisting of sixty folios, is preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under shelfmark 4543 . The text was edited by a committee of researchers under the supervision of Nur al-Din Talib and published in a single volume by Dar al-Nawadir in 1432 AH / 2011 CE as part of a collected edition of Ibn al-Mubarrad's writings .
