Tabaqat al-Shafiiyya al-Kubra (The Grand Biographical Layers of the Shafi'is) is a biographical encyclopedia authored by the Shafi'i jurist and chief judge Taj al-Din al-Subki (727/728–771 AH / 1327/1328–1370 CE) . The work documents the biographies, scholarly lineages, jurisprudence, and intellectual contributions of scholars affiliated with the Shafi'i school spanning seven centuries .
Scope and Structure
The book is the largest of three biographical works that al-Subki dedicated to Shafi'i scholars, alongside his medium (al-Wusta) and minor (al-Sughra) compilations . Al-Subki surveyed prior biographical writings on the school, citing earlier treatises composed by Abu Hafs Umar al-Mutawwi'i, Abu al-Tayyib al-Tabari, Abu Asim al-Abbadi, Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi, Abd Allah al-Jurjani, Abd al-Wahhab al-Shirazi, Ibn Funduq al-Bayhaqi, Abu al-Najib al-Suhrawardi, Ibn al-Salah (which was expanded by al-Nawawi and transcribed by al-Mizzi), and Ibn Batish .
Structurally, al-Subki organized his entries chronologically by centuries, designating each century as a distinct layer (tabaqa) . Within these temporal layers, he opened entries with individuals who had seen Imam al-Shafi'i, followed by figures named Ahmad and then Muhammad out of seeking blessing (tabarruk), after which the entries proceed alphabetically .
Method and Content
Al-Subki designed the compilation to serve broadly as a comprehensive reference covering hadith, jurisprudence, history, and literature . When compiling the biography of a jurist whose narrations were sparse, he made efforts to extract and verify his hadith transmissions . He also utilized the work to articulate rules in the science of narrator criticism (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) .
Beyond standard biographical dates and lineages, al-Subki recorded rare jurisprudential stances (maqala ghariba), weak legal positions (wajh da'if), scholarly disputations, theological matters in creed and legal theory (kalam and usul), literary anecdotes, poetry, and detailed narratives of significant historical crises and trials .
Reception and Criticism
The work is recognized for its encyclopedic breadth. Haji Khalifa noted that it became the most comprehensive reference in its genre, recording al-Subki's own aspiration that any name encountered by a jurist in contemporary books would be documented within it . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani remarked that al-Subki's standing in hadith scholarship is recognized through his Tabaqat .
Conversely, the work drew criticism regarding the author's theological partiality; modern scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Mu'allimi criticized al-Subki for showing excess and harshness toward his teacher al-Dhahabi on account of theological differences .
Notable Editions
Tabaqat al-Shafiiyya al-Kubra was printed in Cairo in six volumes by al-Matba'a al-Husayniyya in 1324 AH (1906 CE) . It was subsequently edited critically by Mahmud Muhammad al-Tanahi and Abd al-Fattah Muhammad al-Hilw, published in Cairo by Isa al-Babi al-Halabi and later issued in ten volumes by Dar Hijr .
