Taammulat fi Ruya Yusuf (Meditations on the Vision of Joseph) is a contemporary Quranic study by the Saudi author Ahmad ibn Abd al-Aziz Qashu focusing on the analytical reflection and interpretation of the dream of the Prophet Joseph (Yusuf) in Surah Yusuf.
Scope and Purpose
The book examines the Quranic verse in which Yusuf relates his dream to his father: إِذْ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَاأَبَتِ إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوْكَبًا وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ رَأَيْتُهُمْ لِي سَاجِدِينَ ("When Joseph said to his father, 'O my father, indeed I have seen eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me'"). The author notes that despite containing only six fundamental symbolic elements, the dream encompasses deep meanings and foundational principles for the Islamic discipline of dream interpretation (ta'bir al-ruya). It also explores whether Yusuf's dream was directly interpreted in the narrative or differed in its fulfillment from other visions mentioned in the chapter.
Structure and Contents
The work is organized into an introduction (tamhid) followed by three main chapters (fusul), subdivided into research sections (mabahith):
- Chapter One: The Status of Yusuf's Vision (Makanat Ru'ya Yusuf): Comprises six sections addressing the key guidelines for dream interpretation, the thematic connection between Yusuf's vision being part of the unseen realm and Surah Hud, the designation of Yusuf's vision as the first dream verse revealed in the Quran, its place within the "best of stories" (ahsan al-qasas), the symbolic nature of the vision (al-ru'ya al-marmuzah), and a critical examination of whether his vision was interpreted.
- Chapter Two: The Meanings of Yusuf's Symbols (Ma'ani Rumuz Yusuf): Comprises three sections analyzing the specific signs relating to Yusuf (including the linguistic and numerical significance of the eleven stars and solidarity among brothers), the attributes concerning his brothers, and the symbolic meanings of the sun, moon, and prostration.
- Chapter Three: Learning Dream Interpretation from Yusuf's Vision (Kayfa Nata'allam Tafsir al-Ahlam min Khilal Ru'ya Yusuf): Addresses Jacob's (Ya'qub's) counsel in the verse يَابُنَيَّ لَا تَقْصُصْ رُؤْيَاكَ ("O my son, do not relate your vision"), along with basic rules and benefits of dream interpretation.
