Ta'liqat al-Daraqutni 'ala al-Majruhin li-Ibn Hibban (al-Daraqutni's Marginal Notes on Ibn Hibban's al-Majruhin) is a compilation of hadith narrator criticism consisting of marginal annotations and critical rectifications by the Baghdadi hadith scholar al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) on Kitab al-Majruhin by Ibn Hibban (d. 354 AH / 965 CE) .

Content and Characteristics

The work consists of concise marginal notes and rectifications (istidrakat) evaluating impugned hadith transmitters included in Ibn Hibban's biographical dictionary of weak narrators . Along with al-Daraqutni's annotations, the margins on the surviving text also incorporate remarks by Abu Ishaq Ibn Shaqla, including excerpts from the biographical work al-Du'afa' by Zakariyya ibn Yahya al-Saji transmitted via Ibn Shaqla .

Transmission and Publication History

The annotations are preserved in the margins of the manuscript of Kitab al-Majruhin originally held at Dar al-Hadith al-Nuriyyah in Damascus . A transcript made from this Damascus exemplar is preserved in the Hagia Sophia (Aya Sofya) Library in Istanbul (MS 496) .

A portion of the text along with these marginal notes was initially published in Hyderabad, India, by al-Matba'ah al-'Aziziyyah (1390 AH / 1970 CE) up to the end of the second volume, ending prior to the biography of Mandal ibn Abd Allah al-'Abdi . The collected marginalia were subsequently extracted and published as an independent monograph in 1414 AH / 1994 CE under the title Ta'liqat al-Daraqutni 'ala al-Majruhin li-Ibn Hibban al-Busti wa-ma'ahu Nuqulat min Kitab al-Du'afa' li-l-Saji min Riwayat Ibn Shaqla, jointly released by al-Faruq al-Hadithah in Beirut and Dar al-Kitab al-Islami in Cairo . Because of this standalone edition, editors of subsequent printings of Kitab al-Majruhin have generally omitted al-Daraqutni's notes from their margins .
