Suwar min Hayat al-Sahaba (Pictures from the Lives of the Companions) is a biographical work by the Syrian scholar and author Abd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha (d. 1406 AH / 1986 CE), presenting literary profiles of the Companions of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

Origin and Composition

The work originally began as a radio program of the same name broadcast on Saudi Radio, with its first episodes airing during the month of Ramadan in 1390 AH (1970 CE), written and presented by al-Basha himself . Due to its popularity, the material was adapted into print, with its first edition published in 1394 AH (1974 CE) . Each edition of the book opens with a supplication penned by the author: "O Allah, I have loved the Companions of Your Prophet Muhammad ﷺ with the truest and deepest love; so grant me on the Day of Greatest Terror to any of them, for You know that I have not loved them except for Your sake, O Most Merciful of the merciful" .

Structure and Publication History

The work was initially issued as a collection of separate small parts—broadly known in seven volumes—each containing around seven to eight concise biographies . In expanded editions, the work was reorganized into two primary volumes:

  • The first volume brought together the earlier seven parts along with authorial additions and revisions, added an eighth part printed for the first time, and replaced earlier entries on female Companions with new biographies after dedicating an independent companion work to them titled Suwar min Hayat al-Sahabiyyat .
  • The second volume assembled six parts containing an additional collection of biographies that had not previously appeared in print .

The book has been published across various editions by publishers including Dar al-Nafa'is in Beirut and Dar al-Adab al-Islami in Cairo .

Methodology and Style

Rather than following the conventional chronological framework of classical biographical dictionaries—which routinely structured entries around birth, death, and isolated historical actions—al-Basha selected defining moments, virtues, and illuminating episodes from each figure's life . Drawing his material from classical biographical works and hadith compilations, he restructured the historical accounts into an expressive, accessible literary narrative designed to highlight moral lessons and religious dedication . The author specifically aimed to present these figures as practical role models for Muslim youth and younger readers .

Reception and Educational Adoption

Suwar min Hayat al-Sahaba, along with its sister work Suwar min Hayat al-Tabi'in, received widespread acclaim for its refined prose, emotional resonance, and clarity . Contemporary educators and scholars commended it as an effective introductory resource for young audiences and general readers seeking accessible presentations of early Islamic history . The book was officially adopted into the intermediate and secondary educational curricula in Saudi Arabia by the Ministry of Education and the General Presidency for Girls' Education .
