Sunan al-Daraqutni (Arabic: سنن الدارقطني) is a specialized compilation of legal hadiths (ahadith al-ahkam) by the Iraqi hadith master and critic al-Daraqutni (306–385 AH / 918–995 CE) . While widely known as Sunan al-Daraqutni, Ibn Khayr al-Ishbili recorded its formal title as al-Sunan 'an Rasul Allah ﷺ, Ibn Kathir referred to it as al-Sunan al-Kabir, and certain manuscripts transmit it under the title al-Mujtana min al-sunan al-ma'thura 'an al-nabiyy ﷺ wa-l-tanbih 'ala al-sahih minha wa-l-saqim wa-khtilaf al-naqilina laha fi alfaziha, though researchers have considered this longer variant a scribal addition .
Purpose and Scope
Unlike canonical Sunan works designed primarily to establish authoritative proofs for legal rulings, Sunan al-Daraqutni was conceived with a heavy emphasis on hadith criticism and defect identification ('ilal) . Al-Daraqutni gathered rare and obscure legal traditions (ghara'ib al-sunan), extensively incorporating weak (da'if), uncorroborated (munkar), and even fabricated (mawdu') narrations alongside sound (sahih) and fair (hasan) ones, in order to expose their hidden defects and clarify the standing of their transmitters .
In addition to prophetic traditions, the collection contains an unusually large quantity of non-prophetic reports, such as statements of the Companions (mawqufat), views of the Successors (maqati'), and legal rulings (fatawa), alongside severed chains (marasil) .
Method and Structure
The work is organized systematically according to the standard thematic books and subchapters of Islamic jurisprudence (kutub wa-abwab al-fiqh) . It spans approximately 5,687 narrations, a volume exceeded among the four prominent Sunan only by the collection of al-Nasa'i .
Al-Daraqutni's methodological features in the book include:
- Compiling multiple lines of transmission (turuq) for single reports to illustrate variations in the text (matn) and chain (isnad) .
- Disclosing flaws such as interruptions (inqita'), hurrying of chains (irsal), and misattributions of status (waqf) .
- Evaluating the reliability of transmitters through direct remarks on jarh and ta'dil, although he also leaves many narrations and transmitters unremarked upon within the text .
Scholarly Reception
Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi noted that no one could compile the contents of this book except someone who possessed an advanced mastery of differing juristic rulings . Later critics, including Ibn 'Abd al-Hadi and Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani, observed that the presence of weak and defective hadiths does not diminish the work's merit; rather, it represents the author's deliberate intention to document and expose unauthentic narrations .
Hadith scholars have highlighted a common error among non-specialists and jurists who mistakenly cite narrations from Sunan al-Daraqutni as valid legal evidence merely because they appear in the collection or because al-Daraqutni remained silent on them, citing examples such as Ibn Qudama's citation in al-Mughni of the report of Mussa al-Azdiyya regarding post-natal bleeding, even though al-Daraqutni had declared her non-probative elsewhere .

- Al-Ta'liq al-Mughni 'ala Sunan al-Daraqutni by Abu al-Tayyib Muhammad Shams al-Haqq al-Azim Abadi, an analytical commentary printed as marginalia that evaluates narrations, details narrator defect statuses, identifies shared transmissions, and outlines positions across the four Sunni madhhabs .
- Man takallama fihi al-Daraqutni fi Kitab al-Sunan min al-du'afa' wa-l-matrukin wa-l-majhulin, an 8th-century AH monograph compiled by Nasir al-Din Ibn Zurayq al-Hanbali (d. 803 AH) collecting over two hundred critical evaluations of transmitters made by al-Daraqutni that were missing from standard printed versions of the Sunan .
Early printed editions of the book include the Delhi edition of 1310 AH, as well as the Cairo edition published in four parts bound across two volumes with the annotations of al-Azim Abadi and edited by 'Abd Allah Hashim Yamani .
