Sullam Akhlaq al-Nubuwwa: Dirasa Qurʾaniyya (The Ladder of Prophetic Ethics: A Quranic Study) is a thematic Quranic study by the Egyptian scholar Mahmud Muhammad Gharib, examining the moral character of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and its progressive elevation through divine revelation .
Purpose and Methodology
The work was conceived as part of a series of educational treatises designed to serve the Prophetic Sunna and address the moral and intellectual needs of contemporary Muslim youth . Gharib deliberately set aside the comparative philosophical approach employed in works such as Muhammad Abdullah Draz's Dustur al-Akhlaq al-Qurʾaniyya (The Moral Code of the Quran), as well as the purely historical narration of biographical anecdotes exemplified in Ahmad al-Hufi's studies . Instead, he adopted a direct Quranic analytical method, grounding moral development in the "jurisprudence of priorities" (fiqh al-awlawiyyat) and emphasizing fundamental ethical principles over secondary matters .
Structure and Content
The core thesis of the book structures the Prophet's ﷺ moral trajectory into four distinct ascending stages (al-marahil al-akhlaqiyya al-arbaʿ):
- Pre-revelation Morality: The period prior to the descent of اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ (Recite in the name of your Lord), highlighting the Prophet's innate rectitude and trustworthiness as recognized by figures such as Khadija bint Khuwaylid and the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius .
- Quranic Elevation: The stage where divine commands directly honed and elevated the Prophet's moral conduct, centered on verses such as وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَى خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ (And indeed, you are of a great moral character) and خُذِ الْعَفْوَ وَأْمُرْ بِالْعُرْفِ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الْجَاهِلِينَ (Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant) .
- Immersion in Revelation: The stage where the Prophet's personality merged completely with the Quranic guidance—described by the author as an inseparable blending—moving continuously from perfection to higher perfection until he functioned as a living embodiment of the scripture .
- Completion of Noble Ethics: The culminating stage focusing on the Prophet's universal mission to perfect virtuous character, reflecting the hadith إنما بعثت لأتمم مكارم الأخلاق (I was only sent to perfect noble character), wherein the Prophet did not merely embody morality but reformed the universal standards of ethical conduct .
Publication
The book includes an introductory presentation by the author Hudaywi Halawa, imam and khatib in Salalah, Oman . A second edition of the work was issued in Cairo by Dar al-Qalam li-l-Turath in 1419 AH / 1998 CE .
