Subaiyat Abi al-Maali al-Farawi (Arabic: سباعيات أبي المعالي الفراوي), also titled al-Arbaun al-Subaiyyat (الأربعون السباعيات), is a compilation of forty hadiths transmitted by the Shafi'i hadith scholar Abu al-Maali Abd al-Munim ibn Abd Allah al-Farawi (d. 587 AH / 1191 CE) and compiled (takhrij) by Abu al-Mahasin Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Maliki.

Content and Transmission

The work belongs to the genre of elevated chains of transmission (uluww al-isnad), specifically featuring seven-tier narrations (suba'iyyat) where seven intermediaries stand in the chain between the compiler's source and the Prophet ﷺ. It is also identified as containing the narrations of Muhammad ibn Hisham ibn Millas al-Numayri.

The collection was transmitted through multiple lines from Abu al-Ma'ali al-Farawi:

  • Transmitted with direct audition (sama') by Muhammad ibn Umar ibn Yusuf al-Qurtubi and Muhammad ibn Sa'id ibn Yahya al-Dubaythi.
  • Transmitted by general authorization (ijaza) by Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn al-Anjab al-Na'al.

Later scholars actively transmitted and taught the work; it was heard by students from transmitters such as Taj Abu Ja'far ibn al-Qurtubi and Salah al-Din al-Ala'i. The book was recorded in classical transmission indices, including those of al-Wadi Ashi, Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti.

Publication

The work was edited by Yahya ibn Abd Allah al-Bakri al-Shahri and published in a single volume by Dar Adwa al-Salaf in Riyadh in 1419 AH (1998 CE) under the title Ahadith Muhammad ibn Hisham ibn Millas al-Numayri wa-hiya Subaiyat Abi al-Maali al-Farawi.
