Sualat Ibn al-Junayd (The Inquiries of Ibn al-Junayd) is a classical work of hadith narrator criticism (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) comprising the scholarly inquiries posed by Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Junayd al-Khuttali (d. c. 260 AH / 874 CE) to the hadith critic Yahya ibn Ma'in (158–233 AH / 775–848 CE) .
Overview and Authorship
The work belongs to the early hadith genre of su'alat (inquiries), in which students documented the critical verdicts, biographical clarifications, and assessments of their teachers regarding hadith transmitters and hidden defects ('ilal) . It serves as one of the primary historical transmissions of Yahya ibn Ma'in's critical statements alongside the transmissions of Abbas al-Duri, Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi, and Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Mihraz . The text is also referred to in historical sources as Tarikh Ibn al-Junayd .
Content and Method
The compilation records direct questions posed by Ibn al-Junayd to Ibn Ma'in concerning the status of specific narrators, their trustworthiness (thiqah), weakness (da'if), or obscurity, as well as the authenticity of particular chains of transmission . It also includes statements Ibn al-Junayd overheard Ibn Ma'in delivering in response to other interlocutors or unsolicited evaluations delivered directly by him . Throughout the text, Ibn al-Junayd occasionally inserts his own explanatory notes to clarify names, lineage, regional origins, or familial relations between transmitters .
