Sualat al-Athram li-Ahmad ibn Hanbal (The Questions of al-Athram to Ahmad ibn Hanbal) is an early collection of legal questions, hadith defects, and biographical evaluations transmitted from Ahmad ibn Hanbal (d. 241 AH / 855 CE) by his student Abu Bakr al-Athram .

Composition and Method

The inquiries were recorded by Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hani al-Athram (d. 261 AH; another report gives 273 AH), who studied under Ahmad ibn Hanbal and documented extensive jurisprudential and hadith rulings from him . Al-Athram organized these rulings into thematic legal chapters and supported them with scriptural evidences, including prophetic traditions and reports from early authorities .

Because of this arrangement, the work is frequently identified in classical bibliographical literature by titles such as Masa'il al-Imam Ahmad, Sunan al-Athram, and al-Sunan fi al-Fiqh 'ala Madhhab Ahmad wa-Shawahiduhu min al-Hadith (The Traditions in Jurisprudence according to the School of Ahmad and Its Evidentiary Hadiths) . In addition to substantive law, the questioning documented Ahmad's assessments regarding the reliability of narrators (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) and hidden defects in hadith ('ilal) .

Reception and Scholarly Use

Classical Hanbali jurists considered al-Athram's transmission one of the primary references for the legal stances of Ahmad ibn Hanbal . Abu Bakr al-Khallal commended the thoroughness and quality of the collection, comparing its richness to other major transmissions of Ahmad's legal rulings . Ibn Abi Ya'la and Ibn Badran observed that early scholars often cited hadith narrations directly as being "transmitted by al-Athram" .

The work served as an authoritative source in subsequent legal compendia; Ibn Qudamah relied heavily upon its legal positions and hadith proofs in al-Mughni, and Ala' al-Din al-Mardawi cited it across several chapters of al-Insaf . Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi noted examining a surviving manuscript portion concerning commercial transactions (kitab al-buyu') .

Transmission and Manuscripts

Portions of the text survived in fragmented manuscripts. A seven-folio manuscript fragment containing legal inquiries is preserved at the Zahiriyyah Library in Damascus under shelfmark 11400, titled Ajwibat al-Imam Ahmad 'ala As'ilat al-Athram (Answers of Imam Ahmad to the Questions of al-Athram), transcribed by Ali ibn Muhammad al-Nabulsi . A printed edition focusing on the transmitter criticism and hadith defect passages was edited by Abu 'Umar Muhammad ibn 'Ali al-Azhari and published in Cairo in 1428 AH .
