Siyar al-Salaf al-Salihin (Biographies of the Righteous Predecessors) is a biographical compilation by the hadith scholar and exegete Ismail ibn Muhammad al-Asbahani (457–535 AH / 1065–1141 CE), dedicated to the lives and reports of early Islamic figures .
Subject and Scope
The work focuses on the biographies and accounts of the Sahabah (Companions of the Prophet) and the Tabi'un (Successors) . It collects historical reports, spiritual narratives, and moral examples from the righteous predecessors (al-salaf al-salih) of the early Islamic centuries .
Method and Reception
Al-Asbahani compiled the book using the standard hadith methodology of citing traditional accounts with connected chains of transmission (isnads) going back through his teachers and earlier authorities .
Ibn Taymiyyah highlighted the book alongside Abu Nu'aym al-Asbahani's Hilyat al-awliya' and Ibn al-Jawzi's Safwat al-safwah, observing that al-Asbahani properly documented the biographies of the early generations—the Companions and Successors praised in the Quran and the Sunnah—rather than restricting his biographical focus only to later ascetic figures .
Printed Editions
The book has been published in modern editions, including:
- An edition edited by Karam ibn Hilmi ibn Farhat (also recorded as Farhan), published by Dar al-Rayah in Riyadh (1420 AH / 1999 CE) .
- An edition edited by Tariq Fathi al-Sayyid and others, published by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyyah (1425 AH / 2004 CE) .
