Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha wa Shay' min Fiqhiha wa Fawa'idiha (The Series of Authentic Hadiths and Some of Their Jurisprudence and Benefits) is a multi-volume hadith compendium by the scholar Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) devoted to the critical evaluation, source-referencing, and doctrinal analysis of authentic prophetic narrations.
Origins and Composition
The work originated as a sequence of periodical articles written by al-Albani for the Damascus-based journal Majallat al-Tamaddun al-Islami. He began publishing these entries in 1379 AH (c. 1959 CE), five years after the inception of its sister project, Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifa (begun in 1374 AH / 1955 CE). Al-Albani compiled and expanded these entries into independent book volumes in response to requests from students and colleagues, aiming to provide readers with verified prophetic traditions as a primary foundation for Islamic learning alongside the Quran.
Structure and Scope
The work was organized into sequential volumes, each containing approximately 500 numbered hadiths judged to be authentic (sahih) or sound (hasan). Seven volumes were published, comprising a total of 3,500 main narrations, before the author died without completing the planned eighth volume. In the multi-part edition published by Maktabat al-Ma'arif in Riyadh, the seven volumes were issued across eleven physical parts.
Methodology and Content
For each entry, al-Albani provides a detailed takhrij (source attribution), examining supporting transmission paths (turuq), narrator evaluations (jarh wa-ta'dil), and text variants. Beyond isnad criticism, each entry incorporates extensive discussions spanning Islamic creed ('aqa'id), legal rulings and jurisprudence (fiqh), moral conduct and etiquette (adab wa-akhlaq), and terminology in hadith sciences. The work also contains instances where al-Albani revised his earlier assessments, such as reclassifying narrations he had previously deemed weak in other works after discovering corroborating transmission paths.
Reception and Related Works
Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha achieved widespread circulation and became one of al-Albani's principal references for hadith authentication. It served as the basis for several indexes and derivative works, including Abu Ishaq al-Huwaini's al-Maniha bi-Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha. It also attracted scholarly review and critique regarding specific narrator assessments and chain validations from contemporary scholars, such as Abd Allah al-Duwaysh in his critical work Tanbih al-Qari.
