Silsilat al-Adab (The Series on Etiquette) is an instructional work on Islamic manners and conduct (al-adab al-shar'iyyah) by the contemporary scholar and preacher Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid (b. 1381 AH / 1962 CE) . The work expounds the practical and moral etiquettes incumbent upon a Muslim across daily social interactions, personal routines, and religious duties .
Scope and Methodology
The work approaches Islamic etiquette from the premise that the comprehensive nature of the Islamic Sharia encompasses all spheres of human activity, ordering both major and minor affairs and demonstrating the perfection and beauty of the religion . Throughout the series, the author derives rulings and manners directly from the Quran, the prophetic Sunnah, the practices of early Muslims, and the statements of classical jurists, supplementing them with praiseworthy customary norms and practical contemporary applications .
Contents
The series is structured into distinct thematic lessons, covering a wide range of topics:
- Seeking Permission (Adab al-Isti'dhan): Discusses the importance of seeking entry permission to safeguard privacy and domestic sanctity . It outlines its specific rules, instances where it is obligatory or waived, and proper positioning when knocking, such as standing to the right or left of the doorway rather than directly facing the opening .
- Dialogue and Discussion (Adab al-Hiwar): Defines dialogue and its function in establishing truth and refuting falsehood, highlights examples of debate recorded in the Quran and Sunnah, critiques common errors made during arguments, and addresses the issue of interfaith dialogue .
- Food and Dining (Adab al-Ta'am): Details manners related to eating, such as washing hands before meals, citing textual evidence and customary Islamic practices .
- Hospitality (Ikram al-Dayf): Explores the linguistic and legal dimensions of hosting guests as a virtue traced back to the prophets, notably Abraham, and addresses practical considerations regarding unknown visitors .
- Visiting (Adab al-Ziyarah): Outlines principles for fruitful social visits, including prior planning, scheduling appointments, setting purposeful discussion topics, and allowing hosts room to decline or reschedule gracefully .
- Mosque Attendance (Adab Hudur al-Masajid): Emphasizes physical cleanliness, wearing dignified clothing, and maintaining personal hygiene when attending congregation, alongside decorum inside the prayer hall, such as avoiding crowding into tight spaces, refraining from pushing past worshippers, and not crossing directly in front of those in prayer .
- Relieving Oneself (Adab Qada' al-Hajah): Covers specific physical and ritual etiquettes governing personal hygiene and privacy, presented as an illustration of the thoroughness of Islamic legal guidance .
