Shuhada Uhud alladhin dhakarahum Ibn Ishaq fi Maghazihi ("The Martyrs of Uhud Mentioned by Ibn Ishaq in His Maghazi") is a specialized biographical study by the Saudi scholar Muhammad bin Abdullah Ghubban al-Subhi, dedicated to documenting the Companions of the Prophet who were martyred at the Battle of Uhud as recorded by Ibn Ishaq .
Background and Purpose
The author prepared the work for publication in the journal of the Islamic University of Medina (Majallat al-Jami'ah al-Islamiyyah) . He noted that although traditional biographical and historical works mention over one hundred individuals as martyrs of Uhud, the figure established in Sahih al-Bukhari and widely recognized by scholars is seventy; entries exceeding this count largely arose from historical confusion or errors . To provide a concise, rigorously documented monograph suited to journal publishing constraints, al-Subhi restricted his focus to the list transmitted by Ibn Ishaq through Ibn Hisham, on the grounds that Ibn Ishaq provides the earliest surviving enumeration and that biographical dictionaries unanimously agree on the martyrdom of those he listed . The author also intended to dedicate a separate study to the martyrs of Uhud omitted by Ibn Ishaq .
Method and Sources
Al-Subhi adopted the arrangement and sequence established by Ibn Ishaq as preserved in Ibn Hisham's recension of the Sirah . For each martyr, he compiled an entry covering the individual's full name, genealogy, key biographical details, presence at Uhud, and the circumstances or narrative of martyrdom where recorded .
In constructing the biographies, the author relied on classical biographical works, principally:
- al-Tabaqat al-Kubra by Ibn Sa'd
- al-Isti'ab fi Ma'rifat al-Ashab by Ibn Abd al-Barr
- Usd al-Ghabah fi Ma'rifat al-Sahabah by Ibn al-Athir
- Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' by al-Dhahabi
- al-Isabah fi Tamyiz al-Sahabah by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani
Structure and Contents
The book is organized into an introduction, three main chapters arranged by tribal affiliation, a conclusion, and reference indices :
- Introduction: Outlines the significance of the topic, previous scholarly enumerations of the martyrs (such as lists by Ibn Hazm, al-Dhahabi, and Ibn Sayyid al-Nas), textual divergences between lists, and the methodology employed .
- Chapter One: Biographies of the martyrs from among the Emigrants (al-Muhajirun), examining differing historical counts and presenting the four Emigrants documented by Ibn Ishaq, beginning with Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib .
- Chapter Two: Martyrs from the Aws tribe among the Ansar, prefaced with an overview of the tribe and its constituent clans .
- Chapter Three: Martyrs from the Khazraj tribe among the Ansar, likewise prefaced with an overview of the Khazraj and their clans .
- Conclusion and Indexes: Summary remarks followed by an index of referenced sources and a subject index .
