Shubuhat al-Mushakkikin

Shubuhat al-Mushakkikin (Doubts of the Skeptics, also published as Haqa'iq al-Islam fi Muwajahat Shubuhat al-Mushakkikin) is a collaborative contemporary Islamic apologetic work authored by a committee of scholars under Egypt's Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, responding systematically to 147 major polemical objections raised against Islam.

Background and Authorship

The project was initiated under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Awqaf and the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs in Cairo to compile scattered responses to recurrent anti-Islamic arguments into a single reference volume. The preface was penned by Dr. Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq, then Minister of Awqaf, on 18 Safar 1423 AH (1 May 2002 CE).

The writing committee comprised several prominent Egyptian researchers and scholars, notably Mahmoud Hamdi Zaqzouq, Dr. Abd al-Sabur Marzuq, Dr. Abd al-Azim al-Mat'ani, Dr. Muhammad Imarah, and Dr. Ali Gomaa, who also undertook the editorial review and revision of the text.

Content and Method

The book addresses 147 distinct objections and contentious issues advanced by orientalists, missionaries, and modern skeptics concerning Islamic beliefs, scripture, history, and legislation. Each entry presents the precise claim or critique followed by a detailed refutation grounded in traditional Islamic scholarship, textual analysis, and rational argument.

Key topics covered in the work include:

  • The textual history, preservation, and compilation of the Quran across the eras of Abu Bakr and Uthman ibn Affan, as well as later orthographic developments such as diacritics and voweling.
  • Prophetic biography, the Sunnah, and the status of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
  • Islamic social doctrines, including the status of women and comparative theological perspectives with other faiths.

The council formulated a plan to translate the work into several foreign languages to make the refutations accessible to both Muslim and non-Muslim audiences worldwide.
