Shi'r Abi Hayya al-Numayri (The Poetry of Abu Hayya al-Numayri) is the collected poetic corpus of the Arab poet Abu Hayya al-Numayri (d. c. 183 AH / 800 CE), encompassing panegyrics, love lyrics (ghazal), elegies, and descriptive verse .
Content and Style
Abu Hayya al-Numayri was an eloquent poet of Basra whose career spanned the late Umayyad and early Abbasid periods . His verse reflects classical Bedouin diction, mastering both long polythematic odes (qasidas) and rajaz meters . His poetry includes encomiums dedicated to caliphs and patrons across both dynasties, including the Umayyad caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik and the Abbasid caliph Abu Ja'far al-Mansur, whom he also eulogized upon his death .
Beyond political eulogy, his output is particularly celebrated for delicate and tender love poetry (ghazal), as well as intricate descriptions of abandoned campsites (atlal) and desert journeys .
Reception
Early philologists and literary critics held his verse in high regard. The Basran scholar Abu 'Amr ibn al-'Ala' gave precedence to his poetry over contemporaries . Al-Husri al-Qayrawani described Abu Hayya as possessing one of the finest and most naturally delicate poetic temperaments, praising his compositions for their refined artistry, exquisite weaving, and elegant imagery . Classical rhetoricians and commentators, such as in treatises on al-Mubarrad's al-Kamil, analyzed his innovative use of metaphor (isti'ara), noting its freedom from superfluous phrasing . Several of his couplets were anthologized and commented upon in major literary collections, including the Hamasa commentary of al-Marzuqi .
Modern Reconstruction and Editions
Having survived primarily as scattered fragments across anthologies, biographical dictionaries, and grammatical sourcebooks, the surviving poetry was reconstructed and edited in the twentieth century:
- Rahim Sakhi al-Tuwayli collected the extant verses and published them in the Iraqi academic journal al-Mawrid in 1975 .
- Yahya al-Juburi gathered and critically edited the complete collection under the title Shi'r Abi Hayya al-Numayri, published in Damascus in 1975 by the Syrian Ministry of Culture and National Guidance .
