Sharha Abi al-Ala wa al-Khatib al-Tabrizi ala Diwan Abi Tammam: Dirasa Nahwiya Sarfiya (The Two Commentaries of Abu al-Ala and al-Khatib al-Tabrizi on the Diwan of Abu Tammam: A Grammatical and Morphological Study) is an academic study in Arabic linguistics by Ihab Salama (Ihab Abd al-Hamid Abd al-Sadiq Salama), originally submitted as a master's thesis at the Faculty of Dar al-Ulum, Cairo University . Prepared under the supervision of Dr. Muhammad Jamal Saqr, the work investigates the grammatical, morphological, and methodological approaches employed by Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri and al-Khatib al-Tabrizi in their commentaries on the poetic collection (diwan) of Abu Tammam .
Scope and Purpose
The study aims to bridge grammatical analysis with the examination of scholarly commentary methodology . The author selected the commentaries of Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri and al-Khatib al-Tabrizi on Abu Tammam's poetry because they contain the richest material among the historical commentaries on the collection, and because al-Tabrizi gathered earlier commentaries into a unified work while transmitting extensively from Abu al-Ala . Methodologically, the work relies on a descriptive, statistical, and analytical approach .
Structure and Contents
The book consists of an introduction, a preliminary section (tamhid), two main parts (bab), and a conclusion :
- Introduction and Preliminary Section: The introduction addresses the research topic, its significance, and prior scholarship . The preliminary section provides an overview of Abu Tammam's poetry collection, its literary standing, and its commentators, followed by biographical sketches of Abu Tammam, Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri, and al-Khatib al-Tabrizi .
- Part One (Grammatical and Morphological Study): Divided into three chapters:
- Grammatical Foundations (Usul): Explores the grammatical doctrines, schools, and foundational principles utilized by Abu al-Ala and al-Tabrizi, along with a comparative assessment of their foundational methods .
- Morphological and Grammatical Opinions: Classifies and analyzes the morphological views scattered across the commentaries, specifically derivation (ishtiqaq), structural patterns (abniya and awzan), as well as phonetic, assimilation, and substitution phenomena (i'lal and ibdal) .
- Textual Analysis: Studies textual cohesion devices (wasa'il al-tamasuk al-nassi) highlighted by the two commentators in their readings of the poems .
- Part Two (Methodology of the Commentators): Discusses the commentary methods of Abu al-Ala and al-Tabrizi across three chapters . It highlights specific techniques such as verifying variant transmissions, contextual clues, linguistic usage, semantic focus, identification of poetic meters and rhymes, and supporting explanations through Quranic verses, prophetic traditions, poetry, and proverbs . It also draws parallels between their methods and the interpretive conventions of Quranic exegesis (tafsir) .
- Conclusion: Summarizes the central findings and outcomes of the study .
