Sharh Umdat al-Fiqh - al-Rajihi

Sharh Umdat al-Fiqh (Explanation of the Pillar of Jurisprudence) is a contemporary commentary on the foundational Hanbali legal manual Umdat al-Fiqh by Ibn Qudamah, delivered by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajihi.

Background and Context

The original text, Umdat al-Fiqh, was compiled by Muwaffaq al-Din Ibn Qudamah al-Maqdisi as an introductory primer in Hanbali jurisprudence. In introducing the text, al-Rajihi outlines Ibn Qudamah's graded pedagogical curriculum in jurisprudence: al-Umdah was designed for beginners based upon a single transmitted position without divergent narrations; followed by al-Muqni for intermediate students to present differing opinions within the school; then al-Kafi to introduce narrations and textual evidence to train intermediate students; and finally al-Mughni for advanced scholars and jurists.

Content and Method

The commentary follows the standard sequence of Hanbali legal treatises, beginning with the Book of Purification (Kitab al-Taharah). Al-Rajihi explains the text clause by clause, beginning with the opening doxology and progressing through core juristic topics such as the classification of water (purifying, pure but non-purifying, and impure), the rules for cleansing impurities, and the subsequent chapters of worship and jurisprudence. The commentary aims to elucidate Ibn Qudamah's concise phraseology, providing direct definitions, legal conditions, and the underlying rulings for students studying Hanbali law.

Origin and Dissemination

The work originated as a series of audio lectures delivered by al-Rajihi. The spoken lessons were later transcribed and prepared in written form by the Islamweb network (al-Shabakah al-Islamiyyah).
