Sharh Umdat al-Ahkam li-Ibn Jibrin is an Islamic legal commentary on the hadith collection Umdat al-Ahkam of Abd al-Ghani al-Maqdisi (d. 600 AH / 1203 CE), delivered by the Saudi scholar Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Jibrin (d. 1430 AH / 2009 CE) .
Origin and Format
The commentary originated from pedagogical lectures and study circles conducted by Ibn Jibrin, which were recorded across 72 audio tapes before being transcribed and circulated as a written legal text .
Content and Method
The work follows the structural sequence of Umdat al-Ahkam, which gathers legal hadiths primarily agreed upon by Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari and Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj . Ibn Jibrin begins with the book of purification (Kitab al-Tahara), opening with the narration of Umar ibn al-Khattab: إنما الأعمال بالنيات ("Actions are judged only by intentions") .
In his exposition, the author elucidates the textual meaning, analyzes specific terminology, and extracts jurisprudential rulings and practical legal benefits . The commentary covers major fields of Islamic jurisprudence, ranging from ritual acts of worship—such as ritual purity, prayer, and the rites of pilgrimage (Hajj) and their temporal and spatial boundaries—to interpersonal conduct and supplications .
