Sharh Sunan Ibn Majah lil-Suyuti wa Ghayrihi (also known as Misbah al-Zujajah 'ala Sunan Ibn Majah) is a concise commentary on the hadith compilation Sunan Ibn Majah, composed by the Egyptian Shafi'i polymath al-Jalal al-Suyuti (d. 911 AH / 1505 CE) .

Content and Method

The work forms part of al-Suyuti's series of marginal commentaries on the six canonical hadith collections . Written in a highly condensed gloss (ta'liq) format, its methodological approach closely resembles that of al-Suyuti's commentary on Sunan al-Nasa'i . It focuses on clarifying difficult vocabulary, solving grammatical ambiguities, and elucidating brief legal implications arising from the hadith texts without extensive elaboration . The text opens with praise of God as the Possessor of Majesty and Honor (al-Hamdu lillāh Dhī al-Jalāl wa-l-Ikrām) .

The commentary is distinct from the similarly titled Misbah al-Zujajah fi Zawa'id Ibn Majah by Ahmad ibn Abi Bakr al-Busiri (d. 840 AH), which gathers and evaluates the narrations in Sunan Ibn Majah that are surplus to the other five canonical books .

Abridgments and Combined Editions

Al-Suyuti's commentary was abridged by the Moroccan scholar Ali ibn Sulayman al-Dimnati (d. 1306 AH) under the title Nur Misbah al-Zujajah 'ala Sunan Ibn Majah, which was printed in Egypt in 1299 AH .

In the Indian subcontinent, al-Suyuti's gloss was frequently studied and published on the margins of Sunan Ibn Majah alongside Injah al-Hajah, an abridged commentary by Abd al-Ghani al-Dihlawi (d. 1296 AH) . The Indian scholar Fakhr al-Hasan al-Gangohi (d. 1315 AH) subsequently compiled an extensive marginal commentary on Sunan Ibn Majah by merging the material of al-Dihlawi's Injah al-Hajah and al-Suyuti's Misbah al-Zujajah, appending his own supplementary notes .
