Sharh Sunan Ibn Majah (Arabic: شرح سنن ابن ماجه), also titled al-Iʿlām bi-Sunnatihi ʿalayhi al-Salām (الإعلام بسنته عليه السلام), is a hadith commentary by the Hanafi scholar and traditionist Ala al-Din Mughaltay (d. 762 AH / 1361 CE) on the Sunan of Ibn Majah (d. 273 AH) .

Scope and Composition

The work is an extensive classical commentary on Sunan Ibn Majah, one of the six canonical hadith collections in Sunni Islam . Mughaltay composed a substantial portion of the commentary in five volumes, but died before completing the entire text .

Method and Content

Mughaltay's commentary focuses heavily on the critical evaluation of hadith transmissions, narrator criticism (al-jarḥ wa-l-taʿdīl), and textual verification . In analyzing the chains of narration (isnāds), he systematically clarifies the status of individual narrators, identifies hidden defects such as breaks in transmission (inqiṭāʿ), and discusses the authenticity or weakness of specific reports . He also draws comparisons between the narrations in Ibn Majah and those found in other major compilations, including Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, the Sunan works of Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasa'i, and al-Darimi, as well as Muwatta Malik, Musnad Ahmad, and Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah .

Editions

The work has been published in modern print editions under both titles:

  • An edition edited by Kamil ʿUwaydah, published by Maktabat Nizar Mustafa al-Baz in 1419 AH / 1999 CE .
  • An edition edited by Ahmad ibn Ibrahim ibn Abi al-ʿAynayn, published by Maktabat Ibn ʿAbbas in 2007 CE .
  • An edition edited and studied by ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn Muhammad ibn Hamad al-Majid, published by Maktabat Kunuz Ishbilya in 1434 AH .
