Sharh Sunan al-Nasai - al-Rajhi

Sharh Sunan al-Nasai is a contemporary commentary on the hadith collection of al-Nasai (al-Mujtaba, also known as al-Sunan al-Sughra) by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajhi .

Background and Status of the Text

In the introduction to his commentary, al-Rajhi highlights Sunan al-Nasai as one of the Six Books (al-Kutub al-Sittah) of hadith, which, alongside the Musnad of Ahmad ibn Hanbal and works of supplementary narrations (zawaid), encompass nearly all of the Sunnah . He notes that al-Nasai abridged al-Mujtaba (or al-Mujtana) from his larger compilation, al-Sunan al-Kubra, at the request of an amir .

Regarding its rank among hadith collections, al-Rajhi explains that scholars have debated its standing in authenticity relative to other works: some placed it directly behind Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, while certain scholars of the Islamic West (the Maghariba) preferred it even over Sahih Muslim, arguing that al-Nasai maintained stricter criteria regarding narrators by excluding anyone whose abandonment was a matter of consensus among critics . Al-Rajhi affirms the standard view that the two Sahihs take precedence, followed in rank by either Sunan Abi Dawud or Sunan al-Nasai . He also notes that al-Nasai combined the methods of al-Bukhari and Muslim, adopting al-Bukhari's approach to frequent and specific chapter headings and legal deductions (istinbat al-ahkam) .

Method and Content

Al-Rajhi structures his work as a direct commentary that follows the sequence of al-Nasai's compilation, beginning with Kitab al-Taharah (The Book of Purification) . His method includes:

  • Presenting the chapter heading (tarjamah) set by al-Nasai along with the full hadith and its chain of narration (isnad) .
  • Analyzing the legal rulings (fiqh) derived from the text, distinguishing between obligations (wajib), recommendations (mustahabb), and permissions (mubah) .
  • Outlining scholarly differences of opinion (ikhtilaf) among jurists on derived issues and stating the weightier position (al-sawab) based on textual evidence .
  • Clarifying chain variations and noting discrepancies or errors when comparing the transmission in al-Mujtaba with that of al-Sunan al-Kubra .
