Sharh Sahih Ibn Hibban (Commentary on Sahih Ibn Hibban) is a contemporary hadith commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajihi, expounding upon the hadith collection of Abu Hatim Ibn Hibban (d. 354 AH / 965 CE) .
Background and Scope
In his introduction to the work, al-Rajihi emphasizes that adhering to the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is the sole way of salvation . He highlights the reward of studying and teaching the Prophetic traditions, contrasting it with the stern warning against transmitting unverified or fabricated reports attributed to the Prophet ﷺ . The commentary examines the collection of Ibn Hibban, which was originally arranged under an unconventional system of divisions and types (al-Taqasim wa-l-Anwa') and later reorganized into topical jurisprudence chapters by Ala al-Din Ibn Balban al-Farisi (d. 739 AH / 1339 CE) .
Method and Content
Al-Rajihi structures his commentary around the successive chapters and narrations of the collection, presenting the chapter titles, complete chains of transmission (isnads), and text (matn) of each hadith . His method includes:
- Hadith Grading and Attribution: Incorporating the critical evaluations and authentication of contemporary editor Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut alongside the transmitted text .
- Lexical and Textual Analysis: Clarifying difficult vocabulary, metaphorical expressions, and idioms found in the narrations, such as explaining the phrase أنا النذير العريان ("I am the naked warner") as a vivid metaphor for earnest warning .
- Cross-Referencing: Comparing narrations with variant wordings documented in canonical compilations such as Sahih al-Bukhari .
- Doctrinal and Legal Exegesis: Deriving creedal, ethical, and legal rulings from the texts, including matters of obedience to authorities, the prohibition of unlawful rebellion, and the importance of adhering to the practice of the righteous caliphs .
- Commentary on Ibn Hibban's Annotations: Reviewing and elaborating on the analytical remarks and deductions introduced by Ibn Hibban himself under his signature heading (qala Abu Hatim) .
