Sharh Musnad al-Shafi'i (The Commentary on the Musnad of al-Shafi'i) is a multi-volume hadith commentary authored by the Shafi'i jurist and traditionist Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i (d. 623 AH / 1226 CE), elucidating the traditions transmitted by al-Shafi'i (d. 204 AH / 820 CE) .
Background and Composition
The underlying text, Musnad al-Shafi'i, was not arranged into an independent book by al-Shafi'i himself, but was extracted from his legal writings—principally Kitab al-Umm—as transmitted through his student al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman . In his introduction, al-Rafi'i notes that early traditionists such as Abu Nu'aym al-Astarabadhi and Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm gathered these scattered narrations because al-Shafi'i had focused his efforts on deriving legal rulings and hadith extraction rather than compiling a standalone musnad .
Al-Rafi'i commenced the composition of this commentary immediately following the completion of his legal magnum opus, al-Sharh al-Kabir (also known as al-Aziz), beginning work on it in Rajab 612 AH .
Methodology and Scope
In this commentary, al-Rafi'i details the prophetic traditions that serve as textual proofs for the Shafi'i legal school . His method includes:
- Analyzing the chains of transmission (isnad) and critically evaluating narrators (rijal), offering comprehensive assessments that often spare the reader from consulting specialized biographical lexicons .
- Identifying and explaining subtle defects ('ilal) in problematic narrations .
- Extracting juristic deductions (fawa'id fiqhiyya) and tradition-based insights (fawa'id hadithiyya) from each report .
Scholarly Reception
Scholars recognized the work as a major testament to al-Rafi'i's hadith expertise. Al-Dhahabi stated that al-Rafi'i's profound care for hadith and its disciplines is readily apparent in his commentary on the Musnad . Ibn al-Mulaqqin similarly noted that the work is among the primary writings through which al-Rafi'i's high rank in hadith criticism is established .
Later scholars utilized the commentary alongside earlier works on the Musnad; notably, the military commander and scholar Sanjar al-Jawli (d. 745 AH) drew upon and combined materials from both al-Rafi'i's commentary and Ibn al-Athir's earlier commentary, Shafi al-'Iyy .
Manuscripts and Publication
The work remained in manuscript obscurity for centuries until it was edited by Abu Bakr Wa'il Muhammad Bakr Zahran based on a manuscript obtained from Kuwait University . It was published in four volumes by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs of Qatar in collaboration with Dar al-Falah in 1428 AH / 2007 CE, with an introduction by the hadith scholar Ahmad Ma'bad Abd al-Karim .
