Sharh Musnad Abi Hanifa (Explanation of the Musnad of Abu Hanifa) is a hadith commentary authored by the Hanafi jurist and traditionist al-Mulla Ali al-Qari (d. 1014 AH / 1606 CE) . The work explains the hadith narrations transmitted from Abu Hanifa as compiled in the recension abridged by Musa ibn Zakariyya al-Haskafi .

Background and Underlying Text

Abu Hanifa did not author a unified hadith musnad himself in the manner that Malik ibn Anas compiled the Muwatta or Ahmad ibn Hanbal compiled his Musnad . Instead, his students and later traditionists collected the narrations and legal reports (athar) transmitted through him into individual compilations . Notable early compilers included Abu Muhammad al-Harithi (d. 340 AH), Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani, and Ibn Khusraw, while Abu al-Mu'ayyad al-Khwarizmi (d. 655 AH) later synthesized fifteen distinct musnad transmissions of Abu Hanifa in his work Jami' al-Masanid .

Al-Mulla Ali al-Qari based his commentary specifically on the version abridged by Sadr al-Din Musa ibn Zakariyya al-Haskafi, which was condensed from the extensive collection of Abu Muhammad al-Harithi . In some manuscript catalogs, the commentary is also titled Sanad al-Anam fi Sharh Musnad al-Imam or Musnad al-Anam fi Musnad al-Imam .

Content and Method

In the commentary, al-Mulla Ali al-Qari elucidates the text of each narration, clarifying lexical ambiguities, addressing transmitter chains, and demonstrating the legal derivation (istinbat) of rulings according to the Hanafi school. The work serves as a defense and exposition of Abu Hanifa's hadith transmission and his reliance on prophetic traditions in legal reasoning .

Reception and Related Works

Sharh Musnad Abi Hanifa became one of the standard commentaries on Abu Hanifa's narrations and has been printed in multiple editions alongside al-Haskafi's text . Other scholars also composed dedicated commentaries on compilations of Abu Hanifa's narrations, including Muhammad 'Abid al-Sindi (d. 1257 AH), who rearranged al-Harithi's material according to jurisprudence chapters in his four-volume commentary al-Mawahib al-Latifa fi Sharh Musnad Abi Hanifa, and Muhammad Hasan al-Sanbhali (d. 1350 AH) .
