Sharh Muqaddimat al-Tashil li Ulum al-Tanzil li Ibn Juzi (Explanation of the Introduction to al-Tashil li Ulum al-Tanzil by Ibn Juzayy) is a contemporary scholarly commentary by the Saudi specialist in Quranic studies Musaid al-Tayyar, dedicated to explaining the introductory treatise prefixed to the Andalusian scholar Ibn Juzayy's (d. 741 AH / 1340 CE) renowned Quranic commentary al-Tashil li-Ulum al-Tanzil.

Scope and Background

Ibn Juzayy prefaced his exegesis with two foundational introductions: the first addressing comprehensive principles and essential disciplines of Quranic sciences, and the second dealing with frequent linguistic expressions in the Quran. Musaid al-Tayyar dedicated this work specifically to elucidating the first introduction, placing it within his broader curriculum and series of commentaries on classical introductions to exegesis (usul al-tafsir). In framing his discussion of the author's biography and method, al-Tayyar highlights Ali ibn Muhammad al-Zubayri's study Ibn Juzayy wa-Manhajuhu fi al-Tafsir as a primary reference on Ibn Juzayy's life and exegetical approach.

Structure and Content

The text commented upon comprises twelve thematic chapters established by Ibn Juzayy in his first introduction:

  • The revelation of the Quran to the Prophet ﷺ from the beginning of his mission in Mecca to his death in Medina.
  • The Meccan and Medinan surahs.
  • The meanings and sciences contained within the Quran.
  • The branches of knowledge related to the Quran.
  • The causes of disagreement among exegetes and the principles of textual preference (tarjih).
  • The biographical classes of exegetes.
  • The abrogating and abrogated verses (al-nasikh wa-l-mansukh).
  • Comprehensive principles of Quranic readings (qira'at), alongside subsequent chapters completing the foundational rules.

Throughout the work, al-Tayyar analyzes Ibn Juzayy's phrasing, clarifying terminology, substantiating the exegetical rules, and contextualizing them within the field of Quranic hermeneutics.

Publication

The work was prepared and edited for publication with the assistance of Badr ibn Nasir ibn Salih al-Jabr and issued in a single volume by Dar Ibn al-Jawzi in Dammam, with its first edition appearing in 1431 AH (2010 CE).
