Sharh Jami al-Tirmidhi (شرح جامع الترمذي) is a contemporary Hadith commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajihi (b. ca. 1360 AH / 1941 CE) on the canonical collection Jami al-Tirmidhi by Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi (d. 279 AH / 892 CE) .
Content and Method
The work begins with an introductory discourse emphasizing the status of Hadith science as a vital discipline for understanding the life, states, and legal guidance of the Prophet ﷺ, enabling Muslims to emulate his example . It incorporates and engages with the introductory framework established by Abd al-Rahman al-Mubarakfuri in his commentary Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi, structured into two primary divisions: general principles governing the transmission and critical understanding of Hadith (riwayah and dirayah), and specific benefits regarding al-Tirmidhi, his methodology, and the characteristics of his collection .
In the main body, the commentary systematically addresses the chapters (abwab) and individual traditions of Jami al-Tirmidhi :
- Textual Transmission and Cross-Referencing: Each narration is presented with its complete text, alongside al-Tirmidhi's authenticating remarks (such as hasan sahih) and his citations of related narrators on the topic (wa fi al-bab) .
- Takhrij: The commentary traces the narrations to other major Hadith works, noting their parallel occurrences in collections such as the Sahihayn of al-Bukhari and Muslim, the Sunan compilations of Abu Dawud, al-Nasa'i, and Ibn Majah, and the Musnad of Ahmad .
- Juridical Analysis: The author examines the legal rulings derived from each text, detailing the consensus and differences among the Companions, the Successors, and leading early jurists such as Sufyan al-Thawri, Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Ishaq ibn Rahwayh .
