Sharh Ibn Naji al-Tanukhi ala Matn al-Risala (Commentary of Ibn Naji al-Tanukhi on the Text of al-Risala) is a commentary on the classical Maliki legal and creedal primer al-Risala by Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (d. 386 AH / 996 CE), composed by the North African Maliki jurist and judge Ibn Naji al-Tanukhi (d. 837 AH / 1433–1434 CE; also reported as 839 AH / 1435 CE).
Content and Methodology
The work provides an explanatory analysis of Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani's al-Risala, elucidating its doctrinal positions, legal rulings, and terminology across branches of Maliki jurisprudence. In his concluding remarks, the author identifies himself as Abu al-Qasim ibn Isa ibn Naji al-Tunisi al-Qarawi, referring to the work as a concise exposition and asking readers to overlook any shortcomings in phrasing.
In later Maliki scholarly convention, Ibn Naji's citations in his writings follow specific designations: when he uses the unrestricted phrase "our teacher" (shaykhuna), he refers to al-Burzuli, and when he writes "some of our teachers" (ba'd shuyukhina), he designates Ibn Arafa.
Publication and Reception
The commentary has circulated widely in the Maliki tradition and is often studied and published alongside the commentary of Ahmad Zarruq (d. 899 AH / 1493 CE), with the pair jointly referred to as Ibn Naji wa-Zarruq. A major early edition of both commentaries was commissioned by the former Sultan of Morocco, Mawlay Abd al-Hafiz, through Muhammad ibn al-Abbas ibn Shaqrun and his son Abd al-Salam ibn Shaqrun, and printed at al-Matba'a al-Jamaliyya in Cairo in Shawwal 1332 AH (1914 CE). It has also been edited in modern times by Ahmad Farid al-Mazyadi in two volumes.
