Sharh Bahjat al-Mahafil wa Bughyat al-Amathil ("Commentary on the Delight of Assemblies and the Desire of the Distinguished") is a two-volume commentary on the Prophetic biography (al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah) composed by the Yemeni Shafi'i jurist al-Ashkhar al-Yamani (945–991 AH / 1538–1583 CE) .
Base Text and Subject Matter
The work is an extensive commentary on Bahjat al-Mahafil wa Bughyat al-Amathil, a compendium on the Prophet Muhammad's ﷺ life, miracles, military expeditions, and physical and moral traits (al-shama'il) authored by the Yemeni hadith scholar Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Abi Bakr al-'Amiri (d. 893 AH) . Al-Ashkhar's commentary expounds on al-'Amiri's concise text by examining the historical narrative of the Prophet's ﷺ career, clarifying linguistic expressions and vocabulary, elaborating on legal rulings derived from historical incidents, citing relevant Quranic verses and variant readings, and tracing hadith narrations to their primary collections .
Composition and Transmission
Al-Ashkhar wrote the commentary and began preparing its fair copy, but he died before finishing the final transcription . Following his death, one of his students took up the draft manuscript and transcribed the remaining unfinalized portion, strictly adhering to al-Ashkhar's original phrasing without addition or omission while omitting inadvertent repetitive passages and cross-referencing their earlier occurrences .
Publication
The commentary was printed in two volumes in Cairo at al-Matba'ah al-Jamaliyyah in 1330–1331 AH (1912–1913 CE) .
