Sharh al-Zurqani ala al-Mawahib al-Ladunniyya bil-Minah al-Muhammadiyya (The Zurqani Commentary on "The Divine Gifts through Muhammadan Endowments") is an extensive commentary by the Egyptian Maliki hadith scholar Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Zurqani (1055–1122 AH / 1645–1710 CE) on the comprehensive prophetic biography (sira) and virtues work written by Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Qastallani (d. 923 AH / 1517 CE) . Also recorded in biographical and manuscript indexes under the title Ishraq masabih al-sira al-muhammadiyya bi-mazj asrar al-mawahib al-ladunniyya, the work is widely regarded as one of the most exhaustive commentaries on the Prophet's life, attributes, and special characteristics .
Structure and Scope
The commentary closely follows the thematic organization of al-Qastallani's original text, which is arranged into ten comprehensive objectives (maqasid) :
- The First Objective: God's honoring of the Prophet through his primordial prophethood, pure lineage, birth, nursing, and chronological military campaigns (maghazi) and expeditions (saraya) up to his death .
- The Second Objective: His names, children, wives, paternal uncles, and servants .
- The Third Objective: The perfection of his physical appearance and character, divided into three chapters .
- The Fourth Objective: His miracles (mu'jizat) and exclusive distinctions (khasa'is) .
- The Fifth Objective: The specificities of the Night Journey and Heavenly Ascension (al-Isra wa-l-Mi'raj) .
- The Sixth Objective: Quranic verses revealed in exaltation of his status .
- The Seventh Objective: The obligation of loving him and following his sunnah .
- The Eighth Objective: His medicine and his interpretation of dreams .
- The Ninth Objective: Subtle inner realities regarding his acts of worship .
- The Tenth Objective: God's completion of His favor upon him through his death, divided into three chapters .
Method and Scholarly Approach
Al-Zurqani's commentary is characterized by rigorous hadith criticism and philological analysis . He systematically cites the majority of hadiths transmitted regarding the Prophet's characteristics, biography, and virtues, evaluating their transmission chains to distinguish authentic from weak narrations and determining the most sound and preferred opinions among differing historical and legal positions . In analyzing the original text's dependencies, al-Zurqani noted that about half of al-Qastallani's al-Mawahib was drawn directly from Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Fath al-Bari, both with and without explicit attribution .
Reception and Editions
The commentary is regarded among scholars of sira and hadith as one of the most authoritative references on the Prophet's life and virtues . Historically transmitted in four large volumes, it was also described by bibliographers such as Muhammad ibn Ja'far al-Kattani as spanning eight volumes . In modern printings, it has been published in editions such as the twelve-volume version issued by Dar al-Kutub al-Ilmiyya in Beirut (1417 AH / 1996 CE) .
