Sharh al-Zarkashi ala Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi (Sharh al-Zarkashī ʿalā Mukhtaṣar al-Khiraqī) is an extensive Hanbali legal commentary authored by Shams al-Din al-Zarkashi (d. 772 AH / 1370–1371 CE) on Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi, the foundational jurisprudence manual composed by Abu al-Qasim al-Khiraqi (d. 334 AH / 945–946 CE).
Content and Structure
The work was composed as an exhaustive exposition of Mukhtasar al-Khiraqi, historically encompassing three large volumes in manuscript form. It covers the full spectrum of Islamic jurisprudence across traditional legal chapters, structured by citing the base text under the prefix qāl ("he said") and following it immediately with the exposition under the abbreviation sh (for sharḥ).
Al-Zarkashi also undertook a second, condensed commentary (sharḥ thān) abridged from this major work; however, he left it unfinished, stopping about a quarter short of completion during the chapter on sacrificial offerings (Bāb al-Aḍāḥī), after which it was completed by Umar ibn Isa.
Methodology
Al-Zarkashi's method combines detailed textual elucidation of al-Khiraqi’s phrasing with a systematic analysis of Hanbali school positions:
- Doctrinal transmission and verification: He provides comprehensive coverage of transmitted narrations (riwāyāt) from Ahmad ibn Hanbal and derivative opinions (wujūh) developed by Hanbali authorities, weighing opposing positions against textual and rational proofs to indicate the preferred ruling.
- Textual and linguistic analysis: He examines the explicit statements (manṭūq), implied meanings (mafhūm), and broader legal applications of al-Khiraqi's expressions, while explaining uncommon vocabulary occurring in the source text, prophetic traditions, or transmitted reports.
- Hadith documentation: The work places strong emphasis on documenting prophetic traditions and reports from the early generations (āthār), citing their textual sources and attributing them to their collectors.
- Correction of misunderstandings: He frequently draws attention to erroneous attributions or unclear legal statements transmitted by earlier writers.
Compared to al-Mughni by Ibn Qudama, al-Zarkashi’s commentary focuses more intensively on analyzing the exact phrasing and specific issues raised in al-Khiraqi's base text, providing extensive legal reasoning, evidence, and doctrinal justifications tailored directly to each problem.
Reception and Editions
The commentary is widely praised among Hanbali jurists. Ibn Badran and Ibn al-Imad described it as a commentary unprecedented in its kind, remarking that its style demonstrates profound legal acumen (fiqh nafs) and mastery over the terminology and positions of the Hanbali authorities. Later Hanbali scholars, including Ibn al-Mibrad in his lexical work al-Durr al-Naqi, frequently relied on it as an authoritative reference.
The book was edited and published in four volumes by Maktabat al-Nahda in 1412 AH / 1991 CE, alongside academic editions such as that prepared by Abdullah ibn Jibreen.
