Sharh al-Tasrif lil-Thamanini (also known as Sharh al-Tasrif al-Muluki) is an eleventh-century commentary on Arabic morphology (tasrif) written by the grammarian Abu al-Qasim Umar ibn Thabit al-Thamanini (d. 442 AH / 1050–1051 CE) .
Base Work and Composition
The commentary is an exposition of al-Tasrif al-Muluki (also entitled Jumal Usul al-Tasrif), a concise foundational manual on Arabic morphology composed by al-Thamanini's teacher, Abu al-Fath Uthman ibn Jinni (d. 392 AH / 1002 CE) . Al-Thamanini studied grammar and morphology directly under Ibn Jinni, transmitted both al-Luma' and al-Tasrif on his authority, and composed comprehensive commentaries on both works .
Transmission and Teaching Context
Al-Thamanini, a blind scholar originally associated with the northern Mesopotamian settlement of Thamanin near Jazirat Ibn Umar, presided over teaching circles in Baghdad, particularly in the al-Karkh quarter . Biographical accounts note that while prominent figures and elites frequently studied under his contemporary Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Wahid ibn Burhan, general students studied under al-Thamanini .
Students who transmitted Ibn Jinni's texts and studied under al-Thamanini included Abu al-Ma'mar Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn Tabataba, Ismail ibn al-Mu'ammal al-Iskafi, and Abu Sa'd Muhammad ibn Aqil al-Daskari .
Related Commentaries
In addition to al-Thamanini's work, Ibn Jinni's al-Tasrif al-Muluki was the subject of several other notable grammatical commentaries in subsequent centuries, including commentaries by Ibn al-Shajari (d. 542 AH / 1148 CE), al-Qasim ibn al-Qasim al-Wasiti (d. 626 AH / 1229 CE), and Ibn Ya'ish (d. 643 AH / 1245 CE) .
