Sharh al-Tadmuriyya (Explanation of al-Tadmuriyya) is a contemporary commentary by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Khamis on Ibn Taymiyya’s doctrinal treatise al-Risala al-Tadmuriyya .

Subject and Content

The commentary elicits the themes of Ibn Taymiyya’s original work—titled Tahqiq al-Ithbat li-l-Asmaʾ wa-l-Sifat wa-Haqiqat al-Jamʿ bayn al-Qadar wa-l-Sharʿ—which was originally written in response to questions posed by students of Islamic knowledge from the town of Palmyra (Tadmur) in Syria . The book covers both theoretical and practical theology through two foundational principles:

  1. Divine Unity and Attributes (al-Tawhid wa-l-Sifat): Affirming the methodology of the early generations (al-Salaf) regarding God’s names and attributes without distortion or denial, and countering dissenting theological perspectives using systematic principles and illustrative analogies, such as the unseen realities of Paradise .
  2. Divine Law and Predestination (al-Sharʿ wa-l-Qadar): Clarifying the harmony between divine decree and religious obligations, thereby connecting divine lordship (rububiyya) with the obligations of divine worship (uluhiyya) .

Methodology and Sources

Al-Khamis structured his commentary according to specific pedagogical principles :

  • Dividing the original text into thematic units under descriptive headings to facilitate reading .
  • Defining key technical terminology and difficult words immediately after the quoted passages .
  • Outlining the main points and conceptual elements of each topic for easier comprehension .
  • Referencing Quranic verses by chapter and verse number, authenticating hadiths where possible, and prefixing the work with a concise biography of Ibn Taymiyya .

In preparing the work, al-Khamis drew upon earlier explanations of the treatise, including Taqrib al-Tadmuriyya by Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin and al-Tawdihat al-Athariyya ʿala Matn al-Risala al-Tadmuriyya by Fakhr al-Din ibn al-Zubayr al-Mahsi, which was originally compiled from al-Khamis's own lectures . Al-Khamis also authored a dedicated study clarifying the treatise's terminology, titled Tawdih Maqasid al-Mustalahat al-ʿIlmiyya fi al-Risala al-Tadmuriyya .
