Ibraz al-Maani min Hirz al-Amani (Elucidating the Meanings of "The Protection of Hopes") is an extensive commentary on al-Qasim ibn Firruh al-Shatibi’s didactic poem Hirz al-Amani wa-Wajh al-Tahani (commonly known as al-Shatibiyya) on the seven canonical Quranic readings (qira'at), authored by the Damascene scholar Abu Shama al-Maqdisi (599–665 AH / 1202–1267 CE) .
Background and Transmission
Abu Shama received al-Shatibiyya through multiple disciples of its composer, having read it repeatedly with his primary teacher in the discipline, Alam al-Din al-Sakhawi (d. 643 AH), who himself had studied the work directly with al-Shatibi . His commentary stands as one of the earliest and most influential major commentaries composed on the poem .
Content and Method
The commentary is structured around the sequential verses of al-Shatibiyya, preceded by a comprehensive introductory treatise . This introduction covers:
- The early authorities among the Companions, Followers, and later generations who transmitted the readings .
- The leading Quranic readers across the five major regional centers (al-amsar) .
- The criteria (dabit) distinguishing accepted readings from rejected ones .
- Biographies of the Seven Readers and their primary transmitters .
- Traditions regarding the virtues of the Quran and its recitation .
- An explanation of the alphabetical code system (rumuz) and technical terminology employed by al-Shatibi to indicate readers and their differences .
Following the introduction, Abu Shama systematically explains the general phonetic and grammatical principles (usul)—including refuge-seeking (isti'adha), the basmala, the opening chapter (Umm al-Qur'an), major assimilation (al-idgham al-kabir), pronouns (ha' al-kinaya), lengthening and shortening (al-madd wa-l-qasr), and hamza rules—before addressing the verse-by-verse variants throughout the Quranic chapters (farsh al-huruf) .
Abu Shama’s methodology is distinguished by its deep linguistic justification (tawjih) of the variant readings in classical Arabic usage and detailed grammatical analysis (i'rab) . He also engaged in emending and refining lines of al-Shatibi’s poetry where he considered improvements possible, responding directly to the author’s own invitation in the poem for competent scholars to improve upon it . Additionally, he composed verses cataloging the superfluous ya' letters (ya'at al-zawa'id) at the end of each surah .
Abridgments and Publication
Abu Shama prepared an abridgment of his own commentary titled Mukhtasar Ibraz al-Maani min Hirz al-Amani . The complete text of Ibraz al-Maani was edited by Ibrahim Atwah Iwad and published in Cairo by Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi in 1402 AH (1982 CE) in a single large volume of 763 pages .
