Sharh al-Nazm al-Jami li-Qiraat al-Imam Nafi (Commentary on the Comprehensive Versification of the Reading of Imam Nafi) is a specialized work on Quranic reading (qira'at) by the Egyptian scholar Abd al-Fattah al-Qadi (d. 1403 AH / 1982 CE), providing an explanatory commentary on his own didactic poem on the reading of Nafi al-Madani .

Composition and Purpose

The author composed the work as an elucidation of his didactic poem titled al-Nazm al-Jami li-Qiraat al-Imam Nafi, which focuses on the recitation tradition of Imam Nafi through its two primary transmissions—those of Qalun and Warsh—via the path of the Shatibiyyah . Abd al-Fattah al-Qadi completed the writing of this commentary on Saturday, 12 Ramadan 1378 AH (21 March 1959 CE) .

Method and Structure

In his introduction, the author noted that he intended the commentary to be concise, aiming for straightforward phrasing and clear sentence structure while avoiding superfluous elaboration . To distinguish the original verses from the commentary, he used the Arabic letter ṣād (ص) to mark the poetic text (al-nazm) and the letter shīn (ش) to introduce his explanatory notes (al-sharh) . The text systematically explains the rules, phonetic variants, and specific word differences transmitted from Nafi through both Qalun and Warsh .

Publication History

The commentary was first published in Tanta by Maktabat Taj in 1379 AH, followed by a second, revised and expanded edition published by al-Maktaba al-Islamiyya al-Tijariyya in Tanta in 1380 AH (194 pages) . It was later edited and annotated by al-Sadat al-Sayyid Mansur Ahmad, who completed his editorial review on 12 Rabi al-Awwal 1425 AH (2 May 2004 CE), and issued by al-Maktaba al-Azhariyya li-l-Turath in Cairo .
