Sharh al-Mawqizah li al-Dhahabi (Sharḥ al-Mawqizah fī ʿIlm Muṣṭalaḥ al-Ḥadīth) is a contemporary commentary by Abu al-Mundhir al-Minyawi on the hadith methodology manual al-Mawqizah by al-Dhahabi (673–748 AH / 1274–1348 CE) .
Composition and Publication
The commentary was authored by Abu al-Mundhir Mahmud ibn Muhammad ibn Mustafa al-Minyawi . Its first edition was published in 1432 AH / 2011 CE, bearing registration number 4/2011 in al-Maktaba al-Shamila .
Contents and Methodology
The work is structured as an analytical and pedagogical commentary on al-Dhahabi's text, which itself condensed Ibn Daqiq al-Id's al-Iqtirah and Ibn al-Salah's Ulum al-Hadith while adding distinct critical nuances and biographical insights into narrator evaluation (ʿilm al-rijāl) .
The first volume of the commentary is devoted to authentic hadith (al-ḥadīth al-ṣaḥīḥ) . In it, al-Minyawi covers:
- The textual prologue and introductory descriptions copied by the fifteenth-century scholar al-Biqa'i, addressing editorial observations by Abd al-Fattah Abu Ghudda and critiques by contemporary writers such as Salim al-Hilali and Abd al-Aziz al-Sa'id .
- The definition and criteria of an authentic tradition, including the continuity of transmission (ittiṣāl), the integrity and precision of narrators, the absence of hidden defects (ʿilal), irregularities (shudhūdh), and narrator obfuscation (tadlīs) .
- Distinctions between technical terms, such as the difference between labeling a report ḥadīth ṣaḥīḥ (authentic in itself) versus ṣaḥīḥ al-isnād (possessing an authentic chain), citing the deliberations of Ibn al-Salah and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani .
- Comparative treatments of foundational differences between traditional hadith specialists (ahl al-ḥadīth) and legal theorists or jurists (fuqahāʾ) regarding defective chains and acceptable transmission types .
