Sharh al-Dua min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna (Explanation of Supplication from the Quran and Sunnah) is a contemporary commentary authored by Mahir bin Abd al-Hamid bin Muqaddam on the treatise al-Dua min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna by Said bin Ali bin Wahf al-Qahtani .

Background and Composition

The base text, al-Dua min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna, was originally compiled in Sha'ban 1408 AH as an abridgment of the supplication section from Qahtani's larger multi-volume work al-Dhikr wa al-Dua wa al-Ilaj bi-l-Ruqa min al-Kitab wa al-Sunna, supplemented with additional prayers and beneficial notes .

Observing the widespread reception of the base text across the Muslim world, Mahir bin Abd al-Hamid bin Muqaddam (Abu Abd al-Rahman, from Kuwait) composed a comprehensive yet accessible commentary on its supplications . Muqaddam completed the writing of his commentary on Sunday, 28 Muharram 1430 AH (25 January 2009 CE) .

Method and Structure

Muqaddam structured his work to explain the linguistic meanings and legal implications of the supplications according to the methodology of Ahl al-Sunna wa al-Jama'a . His approach includes:

  • Providing simplified explanations of each supplication's wording, drawing upon major classical hadith commentaries and traditional theological works .
  • Deriving thematic and spiritual benefits from relevant Quranic verses and prophetic traditions .
  • Incorporating additional hadiths concerning the virtues (fada'il), sunnah practices, and proper etiquettes (adab) of supplicating .
  • Utilizing the asterisk symbol (*) throughout the text to clearly distinguish the original treatise from the added commentary .

Review and Reception

At the commentator's request, the author of the original work, Said bin Ali bin Wahf al-Qahtani, conducted a full review of the manuscript . Qahtani corrected linguistic and orthographic errors, verified and documented the hadith citations and historical narrations (takhrij), and created detailed analytical indexes for the book .

Qahtani also wrote a foreword dated the morning of Friday, 10 Ramadan 1431 AH, endorsing the commentary and commending Muqaddam's reliance on authoritative hadith commentaries .
