Sharh al-Arbaeen al-Nawawiyya (Commentary on the Forty Hadiths of al-Nawawi) is a classical hadith commentary written by the scholar and judge Ibn Daqiq al-Eid (d. 702 AH / 1302 CE) on the collection of forty-two foundational traditions compiled by Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (d. 676 AH / 1277 CE) .
Background and Scope
The base text, al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyya, originated from a dictation of twenty-six comprehensive prophetic traditions by Ibn al-Salah (d. 643 AH), to which al-Nawawi added further narrations to complete forty-two traditions covering fundamental legal, creedal, and ethical maxims of Islam . Because of the widespread circulation of al-Nawawi's compilation, early scholars undertook to explain its texts . Ibn Daqiq al-Eid's commentary was among the earliest dedicated expositions written on this specific collection .
Method and Content
In his commentary, Ibn Daqiq al-Eid addresses each of the forty-two hadiths in sequence, beginning with the narration on intention (Innama al-a'mal bi-l-niyyat) . His analysis combines grammatical parsing, vocabulary clarification, legal deduction (istinbat), and the extraction of general juristic and ethical principles embodied in each prophetic text .
Reception
The work established itself as a standard reference among classical commentaries on al-Nawawi's Forty. It was regularly cited and utilized by subsequent commentators of the collection, including Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali in his expanded commentary Jami' al-Ulum wa-l-Hikam, as well as modern scholars writing pedagogical works on the compilation .
