Sharh al-Aqida al-Tahawiya (Commentary on the Tahawi Creed) by Abd al-Aziz ibn Abd Allah al-Rajihi (b. c. 1360 AH / 1941 CE) is a contemporary commentary on the classic creedal treatise of Abu Ja'far al-Tahawi (d. 321 AH / 933 CE) .
Origin and Format
The commentary originated as a series of instructional lessons delivered by al-Rajihi during a specialized educational program held at the Mosque of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in Riyadh . The spoken lectures were recorded onto audio cassettes and subsequently transcribed into written text for circulation and reference .
Subject and Scope
The work provides a line-by-line explanation of the creed penned by Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Salama al-Tahawi, which expounds foundational Islamic beliefs regarding theology, prophecy, and the principles of the early Muslim community . In addition to this direct commentary on the text, al-Rajihi engaged with the broader commentarial tradition surrounding al-Tahawi's treatise through a separate critical work titled Fath Rabb al-Abid fi al-Radd ala Mukhtasar Sharh al-Tahawiya wa-Kitab al-Tawhid (also published as Hiwar ma'a al-Qaysi fi Tahdhibihi li-Sharh al-Aqida al-Tahawiya wa-Ikhtisarihi li-Kitab al-Tawhid), written in response to Marwan Ibrahim al-Qaysi's abridgment of the classical commentary by Ibn Abi al-Izz al-Hanafi .
