Sayl al-Aqlam bi-Fawaid min Kitab al-Ilm min Sahih al-Imam (The Torrent of Pens on the Benefits from the Book of Knowledge of the Imam's Sahih) is a treatise by Abd al-Fattah Musaylihi examining the benefits and juristic nuances found in the Book of Knowledge (Kitab al-Ilm) of Sahih al-Bukhari.
Purpose and Scope
The work is dedicated to drawing out scholarly and practical insights from the prophetic traditions gathered in the Book of Knowledge from Sahih al-Bukhari. In his introduction, Musaylihi explains that scholars throughout history have continuously studied, taught, and commented on Sahih al-Bukhari, and he composed this compilation to contribute to that ongoing tradition of extracting benefits from its texts. The commentary aims to highlight lessons directly from the speech and Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, as well as the methodological insights reflected in al-Bukhari's structuring of the work.
Structure and Method
Before delving into the hadiths, the book provides a concise biographical overview of al-Bukhari, discussing his lineage, birth in 194 AH, pursuit of knowledge, prominent teachers, notable students, personal qualities, major writings, the compilation of his Sahih, and the trials he faced prior to his death.
In analyzing the Book of Knowledge itself, Musaylihi focuses on several core aspects:
- Clarifying the juristic deduction (fiqh) embedded in al-Bukhari's chapter headings (tarajim).
- Explaining the relationship and thematic connection between individual narrations and the specific chapter titles under which they are placed.
- Examining al-Bukhari's criteria for arranging and selecting specific transmissions.
Contributions
The author acknowledges the assistance of Ahmad al-Ghamri, who authenticated the hadiths and historical reports (athar), supplied biographical notes on the transmitters, and added technical chain-of-transmission observations (lata'if isnadiyyah). The transcription and preparation of the book's material were carried out by Ibrahim Kamil and Khalid Abd al-Hakim.
