Sahih Sunan al-Nasai (The Authentic Traditions of al-Nasa'i's Sunan) is a modern hadith work prepared by Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE) that isolates and verifies the authentic narrations contained in al-Mujtaba, the canonical collection of Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Nasai (d. 303 AH) .

Background and Commission

The compilation was commissioned by the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States in Riyadh as part of a project to distinguish authentic from weak narrations across the four major Sunan works: Sunan Ibn Majah, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasai, and Sunan Abi Dawud . It was the third title published in the bureau's series, following the releases of Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah and Sahih Sunan al-Tirmidhi .

Methodology and Scope

The work is based on al-Nasa'i's al-Mujtaba min al-Sunan al-Kubra (also known as al-Sunan al-Sughra), which forms part of the canonical Six Books . Al-Albani examined its traditions, including those deemed authentic or acceptable in this collection while separating weak narrations into a companion volume titled Da'if Sunan al-Nasai .

In the abridged chain version (bi-Ikhtisar al-Isnad), the full chains of transmission were condensed to retain primarily the final Companion narrator and the text of the hadith, followed by al-Albani's evaluation (such as sahih) and cross-references to corresponding numbers in related works, including Irwa al-Ghalil and Sahih al-Jami al-Saghir . Zuhayr al-Shawish noted that al-Albani submitted his work on Sunan al-Nasai without an introductory preface detailing his editorial method or addressing the classical debate regarding whether al-Mujtaba was abridged by al-Nasa'i himself or by his disciple Ibn al-Sunni .

Publication History

The first edition of the abridged isnad text was published in 1409 AH (1988–1989 CE) by the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States in cooperation with al-Maktab al-Islami in Beirut, under the supervision, commentary, and indexing of Zuhayr al-Shawish . Subsequent editions were later issued by other publishers, including Maktabat al-Maarif in Riyadh .
