Sahih al-Kutub al-Tisaa wa Zawaidihi (Arabic: صحيح الكتب التسعة وزوائده, lit. 'The Authentic Hadiths of the Nine Books and Their Additions'), subtitled Mawsu‘at al-Sunan al-Sahiha al-Hadiya li-Aqwam Sanan, is a modern hadith encyclopedia compiled by Hisham Muhammad Salah al-Din Abu Khadra, Hisham Muhammad Nasr Miqdad, and Mahmud al-Sayyid Uthman . The work gathers authentic (sahih) and good (hasan) prophetic traditions from the nine canonical and major sunnah collections along with supplementary additions (zawa'id) from numerous secondary hadith corpora, arranged thematically without textual repetitions .
Authorship and Supervision
The compilation was prepared jointly by the trio of researchers—Hisham Muhammad Salah al-Din Abu Khadra, Hisham Muhammad Nasr Miqdad, and Mahmud al-Sayyid Uthman . The project was supervised, reviewed, and prefaced by Dr. Abd al-Mahdi Abd al-Qadir Abd al-Hadi, chairman of the Hadith Department at the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Al-Azhar University, who also selected the title of the book .
Scope and Sources
The encyclopedia aims to bring together sound marfu‘ narrations attributed to the Prophet ﷺ in order to facilitate access, memorization, and regular study for readers without encountering dubious or weak reports . Its source material comprises:
- The Nine Books (al-Kutub al-Tisa‘a): Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i, Sunan Ibn Majah, Malik ibn Anas's Muwatta, and Sunan al-Darimi .
- Additional Hadith Collections (Kutub al-Zawa'id): Sahih Ibn Khuzayma, Sahih Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim al-Naysaburi's al-Mustadrak, Sunan al-Daraqutni, Abu Ya'la al-Mawsili's Musnad, Abd al-Razzaq al-San'ani's Musannaf, Ibn Abi Shayba's Musannaf, Sunan Sa‘id ibn Mansur, al-Bukhari's al-Adab al-Mufrad, Ibn Abi Asim's Kitab al-Sunnah, al-Tabarani's three dictionaries (al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir, al-Awsat, and al-Saghir), Musnad al-Bazzar, al-Bayhaqi's al-Sunan al-Kubra and Ma‘rifat al-Sunan wa-al-Athar, as well as the Ten Musnads (al-Tayalisi, Musaddad, al-Humaydi, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Adani, Abd ibn Humayd, al-Harith ibn Abi Usama, Ahmad ibn Mani‘, and the grand Musnad of Abu Ya‘la) .
In determining authenticity for non-Sahihayn material, the compilers relied on authentications from classical and modern scholars, including Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi, Ahmad Shakir, Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut, Muqbil ibn Hadi al-Wadi'i, and Abu Ishaq al-Huwayni .
Methodology and Structure
The compilers adopted a cumulative filtering process across successive stages:
- Agreed-upon traditions (Muttafaq ‘alayh): Compiling reports shared by al-Bukhari and Muslim, utilizing Muhammad Fu'ad Abd al-Baqi's al-Lu'lu' wa-al-Marjan and electronic hadith databases . Identical texts with differing chains were merged, fully duplicate occurrences were removed, and longer, more comprehensive wordings were prioritized over concise variants .
- Individual source additions: Successively extracting unique authentic narrations first from Muslim, then al-Bukhari, followed in order by Musnad Ahmad, Sunan Abi Dawud, Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa'i, Sunan Ibn Majah, the Muwatta, Sunan al-Darimi, and finally the zawa'id collections, omitting any previously cited hadith or narration consensus deemed weak .
To keep the work compact, isnads were abridged by citing only the topmost transmitter (usually the Companion), while cross-reference indexing numbers for primary sources were placed at the start of each entry and the hadith grading was noted at the end . Suspended narrations (mu‘allaqat) in Sahih al-Bukhari were verified using Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani's Taghliq al-Ta‘liq . The entire corpus was categorized thematically into subject-based and legal chapters (such as faith, knowledge, and tribulations), accompanied by brief explanations of difficult vocabulary (gharib) .
Publication History
The work was issued in Cairo and Giza by Maktabat al-Iman . A preliminary edition appeared in 1436 AH (2015 CE), followed by the first official edition in 1439 AH (2018 CE) and a second edition in 1440 AH (2019 CE) .
