Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad is a hadith verification work by the modern scholar Nasir al-Din al-Albani (d. 1420 AH / 1999 CE), dedicated to verifying and distinguishing the authentic narrations in al-Bukhari's moral and behavioral collection al-Adab al-Mufrad .

Purpose and Scope

Al-Bukhari's original work al-Adab al-Mufrad contains a wide range of prophetic traditions (marfu') as well as reports from the Companions and Successors (mawquf and athar) covering Islamic etiquette, personal morals, family ties, and social duties . Unlike al-Bukhari's Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Adab al-Mufrad was not compiled strictly under conditions of continuous authenticity and contains reports of varying reliability . Al-Albani produced Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad alongside its counterpart Da'if al-Adab al-Mufrad to separate the sound narrations—those judged sahih (authentic) or hasan (good)—from those deemed weak .

Method and Content

In the book, al-Albani examines the chains of transmission (isnad) of each narration, issuing rulings on their acceptability and documenting supporting paths (shawahid) and cross-references, often citing his larger works such as Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Sahiha and Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Da'ifa . The work retains the topical chapters and arrangement of al-Bukhari's original text, presenting narrations on themes such as honoring parents, maintaining kinship ties, greetings, and speech etiquette, while providing annotations on significant textual variants and legal deductions .

Publication and Reception

Sahih al-Adab al-Mufrad was published in Saudi Arabia by Dar al-Siddiq in Jubail, with its first edition appearing in 1414 AH (1993/1994 CE) and later reprints distributed in partnership with Mu'assasat al-Rayyan in Beirut . Another compilation under the same title was also edited by Muhammad Husayni 'Afifi, published by Dar al-Khani in Riyadh in 1409 AH .

Al-Albani's edition became widely utilized by contemporary scholars and students of hadith; for instance, the Syrian hadith scholar 'Abd al-Qadir al-Arna'ut taught the book to his students . It is regularly cited as a reference for grading narrations from al-Adab al-Mufrad across modern Islamic legal and hadith studies .
