Sabil al-Muhtadin ila Sharh al-Arbain al-Nawawiya (The Path of the Guided to the Explanation of the Forty Nawawiyya) is a contemporary commentary by the scholar Khaldun Naghawi (Abu Abd Allah Khaldun ibn Mahmud ibn Naghawi Al Haquwi) on the famous hadith collection al-Arba'un al-Nawawiyya compiled by Imam al-Nawawi.

Purpose and Scope

The author composed the work seeking to serve the Islamic faith and defend it against ignorance, polytheism, negligence of the Sunna, and religious innovations. He chose to write an exposition of Imam al-Nawawi's Forty Hadith because its constituent narrations represent comprehensive foundations of the religion, highlighting the methodology of the Prophet's ﷺ companions in understanding and practicing Islam.

Method and Structure

The book is characterized by concise phrased explanations accompanied by wide-ranging scholarly benefits. In his methodological approach, the author emphasizes:

  • Rigorous verification of both prophetic traditions (marfu') and companion reports (mawquf) used as evidence, relying primarily on the hadith scholarship and gradings of Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani.
  • Proper attribution of scholarly disagreements and stating the preponderant opinion (al-rajih) whenever feasible.
  • Reliance upon earlier and modern commentaries written by authoritative scholars known for soundness of approach and deep erudition.

Following the commentary on the hadith concerning the prohibition of religious innovations, the author attached a dedicated supplementary appendix titled Fawa'id wa-Masa'il min Kitab al-I'tisam wa-Ghayrih ("Benefits and Inquiries from the Book al-I'tisam and Others").

Publication

The work was published by al-Dar al-Alamiyya li-l-Nashr, with distribution based in Cairo and Jakarta.
