Riwayat al-Jami al-Sahih wa Nuskhuhu: Dirasa Nazariya Tatbiqiya (Transmission Recensions and Manuscripts of al-Jami al-Sahih: A Theoretical and Applied Study) is an academic study by the contemporary hadith scholar Jumaa Fathi Abd al-Halim on the transmission paths, manuscript copies, and textual variations of Sahih al-Bukhari .

Origin and Composition

The book originated as a doctoral dissertation in hadith submitted to the Faculty of Usul al-Din at Al-Azhar University under the title al-Ikhtilaf bayna Riwayat al-Jami al-Sahih wa Nuskhuhu: Dirasa Nazariya Tatbiqiya . It was supervised by Ahmad Umar Hashim and Mustafa Muhammad Abu Amara, reviewed by Ahmad Ma'bad Abd al-Karim, and examined by a committee consisting of Marwan Shahin, Muhammad Bakkar, Izzat Atiyya, and Abd al-Mahdi Abd al-Qadir .

Purpose and Scope

The work investigates how Muslim scholars received and transmitted Sahih al-Bukhari across generations, detailing the transmission chains of its recensions, describing its major manuscript traditions, identifying the causes and manifestations of textual variations among them, and examining the methodologies established by classical scholars to harmonize and evaluate these differences . The author sought to bridge theoretical descriptions of recensions with applied analysis of specific textual variants in the Sahih, addressing methodological errors that arise from neglecting variant readings .

Structure and Contents

The book is arranged into an introduction, a preparatory chapter (tamhid), three main parts (abwab), a conclusion, and indexes :

  • Introduction and Preamble: The introduction outlines the status of the prophetic Sunna, the significance of isnads, previous literature, terminology, and research motives . The preamble examines hadith scholars' protocols for hearing and transmitting (tahammul wa-ada) and the rules for verifying, collating, and preserving written texts .
  • Part One (Generations of Transmitters from al-Bukhari): Following a prefatory note on al-Bukhari's narration of his work, it covers direct narrators such as Ibrahim ibn Ma'qil al-Nasafi, Hammad ibn Shakir al-Nasafi, Abu Abd Allah al-Firabri, Abu Talha al-Bazdawi, and Abu Abd Allah al-Mahamili . It then traces the transmissions through al-Firabri's students—including Abu Ali Ibn al-Sakan, Abu Zayd al-Marwazi, Abu Ishaq al-Mustamli, Abu Muhammad al-Hammu'i, and Abu al-Haytham al-Kushmihani—and details the prominent chains up to the fifth century AH, such as those of Abu Dharr al-Harawi, al-Asili, Abu al-Waqt, and Karima al-Marwaziyya .
  • Part Two (Variations Among Transmissions): Divided into four chapters covering the forms of textual differences, their historical and scribal causes, the scholarly consequences of these variations, and the interpretive tools used to evaluate and reconcile them .
  • Part Three (Scholarly Efforts in Recording and Standardizing Variations): Focuses on regional and textual traditions, including Eastern scholarship represented by Sharaf al-Din al-Yunini, his collation methodology and sigla, and the imperial Sultaniyya edition; Western (Andalusian and Maghribi) scholarship and the manuscript recensions of Abu Ali al-Sadafi and Abu Imran Musa Ibn Sa'ada; and major reference works that documented variant readings, including commentaries like Fath al-Bari by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani and Irshad al-Sari by al-Qastallani, as well as specialized lexical treatises such as Mashariq al-Anwar by al-Qadi Iyad, Taqyid al-Muhmal by Abu Ali al-Jayyani, and Matali al-Anwar by Ibn Qurqul .
  • Conclusion: Summarizes the research findings, recommendations, and proposed guidelines for establishing an authentic, critical text of Sahih al-Bukhari .

The work was published in a two-volume first edition in 1424 AH / 2013 CE by Dar al-Falah for Scientific Research and Heritage Editing in Faiyum, Egypt, in collaboration with Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut, as part of the Islamic heritage revival and publishing program of the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs of Qatar .
