Riwayat al-Baghawi fi Tafsirihi Maalim al-Tanzil an Shaykhihi Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi "Takhrij wa Dirasah" (The Narrations of al-Baghawi in His Exegesis Ma'alim al-Tanzil from His Teacher 'Abd al-Wahid al-Mulayhi: Extraction and Study) is an academic study in Hadith and Quranic exegesis by Abd al-Hamid Shaykhun (Abd al-Hamid Abd al-Raziq Shaykhun Muhammad) . It investigates, extracts (takhrīj), and analyzes all prophetic traditions and reports transmitted by Abu Muhammad al-Husayn ibn Mas'ud al-Baghawi through his teacher Abu Amr Abd al-Wahid ibn Ahmad al-Mulayhi across his Quranic commentary Ma'alim al-Tanzil .
Background and Scope
The work was presented as a master's thesis in Arabic language and literature (Islamic studies section) at Alexandria University's Faculty of Arts during the 1435 AH / 2014 CE academic year, under the supervision of Shahat al-Sayyid Zaghlul, al-Sa'id Bayyumi al-Waraqi, and Majida Ahmad Sulayman . The author undertook the project after identifying a lack of independent academic studies addressing the specific transmission route of al-Baghawi from al-Mulayhi, which constitutes a primary pathway in Ma'alim al-Tanzil for narrating major source texts such as Sahih al-Bukhari, the Musannaf of Abd al-Razzaq al-San'ani, and the Musnad of Ali ibn al-Ja'd . The applied scope encompasses 546 elevated (marfūʿ) narrations and related traditions transmitted through this chain throughout the entire exegesis .
Structure
The study is organized into a preliminary introduction, three chapters, a conclusion, and general indexes :
- Preliminary Introduction (al-Tamhīd): Covers the biography and scholarly standing of al-Baghawi, as well as an introduction to Ma'alim al-Tanzil and its significance .
- Chapter One: Explores al-Baghawi's Hadith methodology through four sections: his method of narrating from al-Mulayhi, his presentation of hadiths, his methodology in hadith extraction, and his critical appraisal of chains of transmission and hadith rulings .
- Chapter Two: Examines al-Baghawi's sources and purposes in two sections: his transmission sources through al-Mulayhi, and his objectives in citing hadiths within his exegesis .
- Chapter Three: Constitutes the applied study, containing the comprehensive extraction, authentication, and analysis of all 546 narrations and reports transmitted through al-Mulayhi, arranged according to their sequence in the exegesis .
The study concludes with thematic indexes for Quranic verses, prophetic traditions and reports, biographical entries of narrators, cited sources, and subject headings .
Findings
The research concludes that Ma'alim al-Tanzil functions not only as an exegesis but also as a hadith compendium containing over two thousand narrations cited with al-Baghawi's own chains of transmission . Al-Baghawi's transmission from al-Mulayhi serves as a key channel for reporting compiled works; al-Mulayhi transmitted Sahih al-Bukhari via al-Nu'aymi from al-Firabri from al-Bukhari, and also transmitted Humayd ibn Zanjawayh's al-Targhib wa-l-Tarhib, Musnad Ali ibn al-Ja'd, and al-Musannaf of 'Abd al-Razzaq .
The study also found that explicit rulings by al-Baghawi on individual hadiths are very rare in the text . Among the 546 narrations examined in the corpus, 47 contained weaknesses, with 13 of those rising to the level of sound (ṣaḥīḥ) when evaluated collectively alongside their corroborating transmission paths and supporting witnesses (shawāhid) .
